Lawyers stage protest against ‘Service Tax’

Lawyers associated with the Jammu bar on Thursday went on two day token strike to register their protest against imposition of service tax on lawyers and law firms.
It is to mention that Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee in his budget speech had proposed 8% Service Tax on advice, consultancy, or technical assistance provided in the field of law. No advocate appeared in the cases listed for the day on Thursday in Jammu wing of the High Court and lower courts and suspended routine work.
Earlier the decision to suspend work for two days was taken at the executive committee meeting of the Jammu bar under the chairmanship of Bar President Sunil Sethi.
"The lawyers will not tolerate any attempt by the government to impose service tax on the legal fraternity and shall adopt all peaceful means to oppose such uncalled for and unwarranted taxes on lawyers," S K Shukla one of the executive member of the Jammu bar said. ‘When we pay income tax on the total income then there is no need to impose fresh service tax, Shukla said giving vent to his anger.
