| RRL celebrates CSIRs 64th foundation day | | | JAMMU SEPT-26- Regional Research Laboratory (RRL) today celebrated CSIRs 64th Foundation Day here today. S S Bir Professor Emeritus and INSA Honorary Scientist, Department of Botany of Punjab University Patiala, who was the chief guest, delivered foundation day lecture entitled 'Vegetation of the Himalayas'. Dr G N Qazi who has been asked by the PM and President CSIR to continue as the Director RRL Jammu, in his introductory remarks announced that CSIR under the chairmanship of Prime Minister has approved that the laboratory will have a new name, as it has grown out from its regional character to the international scene. He said the RRL has been working with the international companies having turn over in billions including Procter and Gamble, Colgate Palmolive and Novakos. In his guest lecture, Prof Bir elaborated on the vegetation of the Himalayas and its rich bio-diversity, phytogeography, its threats and depletion and conservation. He said that during the process of flora evolution through the ages, the Himalayas evolved their own flora characteristics unmatched by any of the floristic regions of the world. He said India is 2.4 per cent of the total area of the earth, plant species 8.9 per cent of the total recorded. Speaking about Himalayan biodiversity wealth, he said that 'Himalayas exhibit a great amount of diversity in its people, topography, climate, soil, rainfall but regretted that over exploitation of soil resources have caused flood devastation in the planes of India'. On this occasion, the chief guest distributed awards to the winners of the Best Research paper Award and an essay competition for children and quiz competition for students and scientists were also held and the winners awarded prizes. |
