Zardari speaks with purpose
7/10/2009 11:33:30 PM

The pro-Pakistan elements, including the separatists,in the Kashmir valley seem to have been astonished and shocked over the recent statement of Pakistan President,Asif Ali Zardari, blaming the successive Governments in Islamabad for having "deliberately created and nurtured"militants and extremists for achieveing short-term tactical objectives.Hitheto, during the last over 20 years Islamabad had been refuting the allegations that Pakistan was providing moral and material support to militants.Islamabad would, occasionally, accept that it was providing moral and diplomatic support to the "freedom fighters."Even Pakistan would try to hoodwink India by denying that it was running arms training camps for militants and whenever Delhi monted diplomatic pressure on Islamabad Pakistan would say that the ongoing "jehad" was being carried out by Kashmir youths and Pakistan had no link with it.Asif Ali Zardari has,by his latest utterances, lent evidence to Pakistan's support to militancy and its proxy war against India in Jammu and kashmir.Zardari seems to have been peeved over the way the Talibans had entrenched themselves in Wazirastan and Swat valley posing a serious threat to the integrity and solidarity of Pakistan.Zardari is annoyed over the ser ies of suicide attacks on police and other security installations during the last one year.It is one of the reasons for the Pakkistan President to make a candid confession on involvement of Pakistan in nurturing militants and extremists.More plausible reasons being that Zardari wishes to paint the military rulers from Gen.Zia-ul-Haq to Gen. Parvez Musharraf in black colours because the operation Topac had been prepared during the time Zia-ul-Haq ruled Pakistan. The same operation was sustained during Musharraf's time. This way Zardari wants to convince people of Pakistan and those in the world who are sick of militancy that he was a liberal democrat opposed to extremism and terrorism. The way political and security situation is developing in Pakistan Zardari has fears that he may lose power eit her through a coup or through some political intrigue and as such he would wish to create an imprssion that he was ousted because of being a liberal democrat. But if Zardari loses power not many in Pakistan will shed tears because as head of the country he has held Pakistan guilty of creating and nurturing militants and extremists which has exposed Pakistan's role in aiding proxy war gainst India and strikes in other countries. If tomorrow the US Government or the United Nations declare Pakistan a rogue state or a country breeding terrorism they will support their decision by the statement of Asif Ali Zardari.Delhi needs to cultivate Zardari so that the two can work together to end the menace of militancy. The statement of Zardari may have earned many an enemies within Pakistan but it has helped the President to win the goodwill of various countries, especially the United States.Zardari would have removed the veil of suspicion had he explained what he meant by nurturing militants for achievening short-term tactical objectives. What were those objects ?The world needs to be told.(eom)
