Jammu , July 10: The prayers of the residents of the Jammu region were answered by the rain God, as the much-awaited brought some relief to them. The residents had been reeling under intense heat wave for the past few weeks.
Since morning the residents didn’t have any respite from the humidity and high temperature. Suddenly, the city experienced a heavy down pour around 6 pm, which continued for almost hours. Few hours of rain, inundated the city roads affecting residential and commercial areas.
The pre-monsoon showers accompanied by a thunderstorm lashed Jammu city since afternoon, brining down the daytime temperature in the city by almost 14°C. According to met department the maximum temperature before the rain was 41.4 but it had come down to 28.2 o after the showers. For the past few weeks, the residents of Jammu had been reeling under intense heat wave and the daytime temperature had broken all previous records. Farmers were also worried as their crops were wilting due to the shortage of water for irrigation.
“The arrival of the monsoon has brought a good news for the farmers of the areas at the tail-end of the Ranbir canal, as they could not get water from the canal and the rains were their only hope,” said Pankaj Kumar, a farmer in Samba.
Another farmer in bordering village of RS Pura said, “The paddy farmers were the worst affected, as their crops were dying due to the shortage of water. But now with the arrival of the monsoon they expect a good crop this season.”
Though heavy rainfall on Thursday evening brought relief to the residents by bringing the mercury down, the accompanying windstorm made lives of many miserable.
All prominent Chowks including , Dogra Chowk , Vikram Chowk, Bus Stand and road at Asia Hotel. The residents had no other option than to wade through knee deep waters. The vehicles parked outside various areas too were found sinking in the stagnant water. Since the roads remained deluged, the slow movement of the vehicles amplified the commuters’ problems. All major roads had a bumper-to-bumper traffic in the evening. Dragging vehicles was a common site on the roads.
The rain brings relief not just from sweltering heat, aggravated by prolonged power disruptions, but also from the soaring prices of vegetables and fruits. People have seen in the past what trouble a drought can spell in India. Prices of essentials shoot up as unscrupulous elements resort to hoarding scarce commodities.
The people of the city were seen enjoying in the rain. Drivers moving on the city roads were seen having fun in the rain by parking their cars aside. Young children had come out on streets of their colonies to enjoy the showers. Commuters were seen moving on the roads with umbrellas and rain coats.
For the past several days there was no relief from the hot and humid weather prevailing all over the state. The power cuts and erratic water supply had made the lives of people all the more miserable in some areas.
The residents had to switch over to their ACs as the air coolers were rendered ineffective by the humid weather. Moving out in the sun also proved very costly for some who suffered sun-stroke.
The rain has brought cheers to farmers also in the district as they are busy transplanting the paddy. It has become easier for them to transplant it in the pleasant weather instead of the hot sun.
Meanwhile students in the Jammu University were seen roaming around in the open, gossiping in groups and reading books under the shade of trees during the past two days. A drop in the temperature due to light showers during the past two days has brought the much-needed relief to the students. Earlier, the campus used to present a deserted look due to the rise in mercury.
