| Despite commitment to help apple growers Mir’s tiff with Congress ministers may not trigger major conflict in coalition | | | Srinagar, September 27 :-The PDP leaders are hopeful that the Chief Minister,Mr Ghulam Nabi Azad, would accept their party’s recommendation for increase of Re. One per kg of culled “C” grade apple in the interest of the apple growers in the state. The Minister for Horticulture,Mr Dilawar Mir,who had exchanged hot words with a couple of ministerial colleagues belonging to the congress on Tuesday told Kashmir Independent Press on Wednesday “I have taken the stand for increasing the price structure for culled “C grade” apple under the Market Investment Scheme in the interest of growers.” He said that a raise of Re.one will provide encouragement to the growers for producing quality fruit. It will also help the apple concentrate units to produce bigger quantity of the concentrate thereby reducing the level of wastage. Mr Mir said,in reply to a question, that increase in the purchase prices of culled apple will not be a major burden on the Government after the subsidy on pesticides had been withdrawn. He said that the apple production in Kashmir is on the threshold of a revolution and in order to compete with the Himachal Pradesh “we need to provide market support and other concessions to the fruit growers.” The Minister made it clear that judged by the annual returns from the apple production and export the Government would be providing the much needed encouragement to the apple growers in Kashmir if the purchase price of C grade apple was hiked by one rupees per kg. Asked why the ministers belonging to the Congress were opposed to his idea Mr Dilawar Mir said that these congress ministers had not conception of the travails apple growers faced from the stages of cultivation to production and to the marketing of their produce. In reply to another question Mr Mir said the issue pertaining to the price hike of culled apple was not going to end in a major conflict between the two coalition partners.”I am sure the Chief Minister will be able to resolve the matter so that interests of apple growers were not ignored,”he said |
