| Let Farooq Abdullah resolve the puzzle | | | Nirbhay Jammual National Conference President, Dr Farooq Abdullah, has, while referring to the current unrest and violence in the Kashmir valley, blamed the vested interests for inciting people to destablise peace. He has stated that there are elements who are bent upon causing disturbances in Kashmir. These elements want to keep Kashmir on the boil. This way Farooq does not seem prepared to blame the ruling coalition for the mishandling of the situation. He does not seem to hold guilty the security forces of human rights violations that have been the main cause behind the current disturbances and unrest in Kashmir. Whenever there are disturbances vested interests usually take advantage of it and incite people to bigger violence. There is nothing new about it and that too in the contest of the Kashmir scenario. The vested interests have been playing their role right from 1948.At times it used to be the tussle between shers (lions),represented by the National Conference and the "Bakras"(he- goats), reprtesented by the followers of Kashmir Mirwaiz.Later it was the tie between the truncated National Conference and the Plebiscite Front. And after Sheikh Abdullah wound up his Plebiscite Front in 1975 following his accord with the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi, which allowed him a chance to regain power, it was a tussle between the National Conference and the Congress. It was followed by accord between the shers and the Bakras when Farooq Abdullah forged alliance with Molvi Farooq, who headed the Bakras and the Awami Action Committee somewhere in 1983.Again it was a friction between the shers and Bakras but a brief honeymoon between the National Conference and the Congress following an accord between Farooq and Rajiv Gandhi. So if there are elements that are bent upon destabilizing peace in the valley at present there is nothing unusual about it. What is unusual about it is that the ruling coalition has not been in a position to tame these elements. When Farooq Abdullah recently said that some elements were keeping kashmir on boil it looked like a puzzle which can be solved only by the president of the National Conference. As a responsible political leader he should have named these vested inrterests and the elements that incite people to violence. He should have identified those that wish to foment unrest in Kashmir. Well one would like to ask a question to Farooq. What has the ruling coalition done to counter the machinations of the elements or forces that are held responsible by Farooq for destabilising peace in Kashmir ?Have the National Conference and the Congress, that share power in Jammu and Kashmir, have joined hands to tame the forces that are behind the current turmoil in Kashmir?.The only service leaders of these two parties have rendered is that they keep on telling the security forces to avoid indulging in human rights violations as if the security agencies deliberately commit excesses. And whenever militants commit excesses and violate human rights these mainstream political leaders seem to prefer "reticence" which they believe is the best way for survival.
