| ‘Smelling foul’ along nallah, Tara Chand calls for cleaner Jammu | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JULY 13: Deputy Chief Minister, Mr. Tara Chand today conducted an extensive tour of Jammu city and inspected the ongoing sewerage and sanitation works. Municipal Commissioner, JMC, SSP Jammu and senior officers of JDA, JMC and other departments accompanied him. Tara Chand visited the nallahs situated at G. G. M. Science College and Nawabad Police Station, Jewel Chowk where cleanliness work was going on. He directed the agencies involved to speed up the work as the foul smell emanating from these nallahs is a serious health hazard for people residing in nearby areas. He said that sanitation in these areas located at the heart of Jammu city, needs to be maintained regularly as they mirror the efficiency of Jammu Municipal Corporation. “The areas are situated very close to Bhagwati Nagar Yatri Niwas which is visited by thousands of yatris every day and hence needs to be converted into landscaped green patches rather than stinking holes”, he added. The Deputy Chief Minister also visited the site of ongoing work of laying of sewerage pipes near Civil Secretariat, Jammu and called for accelerating the pace of work. He said that the sewerage pipes are being laid as part of the master plan for Jammu city whereby the entire sewerage will be collected through ducts and sent to the sewerage plant coming up at Bhagwati Nagar. Tara Chand underlined the need to develop Jammu as a model city with well planned sewerage system and aesthetically maintained link roads. He said that the historical city on the banks of river Tawi needs to be reviewed, adding that public participation is must for returning the grandeur of this city. He asked the departments to develop the city keeping in view the local needs as well as the future requirements so that haphazard town planning does not choke the city which is already reeling with heavy pressure due to migration and population increase.
