| Water scarcity in Banihal villages | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT BANIHAL JULY 13 : Most villages of Banihal are up in arms against the public Health engineering department over the water scarcity of water in Banihal .Residents of Kharpura, Neel, Amkoot, Tethar, Nowgam,Sarbagni, Srachi, Bohrigham villages are reeling under acute water shortage from years. In Bohrigham village of Banihal, young girls can be seen pulling and pushing cart with water on it. They travel on foot few kilometers to fetch a bucket of water for their household use. A long queue of females carrying water bucket on their heads can be seen anytime of the day in the Banihal villages. This has become the routine of the Banihal villages. The residents of the affected villages said that they have time and again taken up the matter with the concerned authorities, but of no avail. “We brought to their notice that the areas are facing acute water shortage and the water supply be restored to the affected populace”, they said. Even in these hotty days, people, mostly females have to walk several kilometers on foot to fetch a bucket of water. “This is a grave human rights violations”, they said. In some villages, people have been taking unhygienic water. Scores of people have fallen prey to the water borne diseases. “It is a grave issue but the surprising fact is that authorities are not taking this issue seriously. They are waiting to see people die of unhygienic water”, the residents added. National Conference worker of the area Choudhary Jamat Ali said, “We have brought this matter to the notice of the authorities, but they are paying no heed to ours pleas”. The residents threatened that in case the pure and hygienic water is not supplied to them, they would take to roads and stage protests and paralyse the functioning of the district administration
