| Simple, easy to plug arithmetic is costing PDD dearly | | | CHAMAN KAUL JAMMU, JULY 13: It is an easy to plug jugulary of figures which costing the electricity supplier –the Power Development Department –dearly. With a status of merely 50% customers in records of the Power Development Department (PDD) and out of existing 50% only 49% consumers are metered and the major chunk is entitled to pay below the range of 1KW at the cost of Rs. 50 to Rs.100 a month which makes the task of linemen to manage their daily expenses. At an average of 50.34MU saleable energy public lighting costs Rs.760/kW/month, which could be saved if managed properly by the department. People are facing jolts of unprecedented power cuts across the Jammu region while as street lights continue to glow during the broad day light in the posh areas of Gandhi Nagar and adjoining areas. At few places public lights get off only it becomes non functional after its installation. Not only PDD but also people of the locality take things easy despite knowing the fact that saving power in the state is as good as to save a life. Chief Engineer Power Development Department (PDD) said to maintain the street lights and public lights is responsibility of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) and Public Works Department (PWD) but instead of maintaining the same they have put responsibility over the PDD. Both departments neither pay rent nor try to stop losses worth crores of rupees, he said and added “neither there is man power with PDD nor energy being given free to us and under such circumstances JMC and PWD are trying to put burden PDD”. He said despite appraisal to government verbally as well as in writing nothing in this regard is being done so far, but with expansion in cabinet, he expressed hope that issues will get solved. “I wish that should I have learned to switch off the street lights I would have put them off every morning while going for morning walk from my residence and across Gandhi Nagra and adjoining locations” said Rana Irshad. It is relevant to mention that during the reigns of Maharaj all public lights were made to glow in evening and were put off early in the morning, no to save electricity but for the sake of routine as for those days there were not as much customers as are now-a-days. Not only this but just couple of years back all the lights were connected to a grid and were maintained, glowed and put off timely because PDD was alone doing the task. Due to indulging of JMC and PWD things are in its worst position. The only hope remains is to wait and watch as what and how will the new minister contribute to tackle the menace.
