Early Times Report Jammu, July 14: The Division of Entomology, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences-Jammu has organised a 21 day Summer School on “Ecologically Based Integrated Pest Management under Eco-Fragile Hill Agro-Ecosystem” sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research New Delhi from today. Dr. D P Abrol Professor & Head Division of Entomology and Course Director informed that the aim of the summer school is to maximize crop production with minimum input costs, minimize environmental pollution in soil, water and air due to pesticides, minimize occupational health hazards due to chemical pesticides and preserve ecosystem and maintain ecological equilibrium. More than 21 participants from nine states such as Assam, Karnatka, Maharashtra, Gujarat, U.P, Uttaranchal, Jharkhand, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir are attending this course. Besides expert from the University Professor V. Kaul, Dr. Hafeez Ahmad, Dr. Uma Shankar, Dr. Kuldeep and Dr. Devinder Sharma, eminent experts from Indian Agricultural Research Institute New Delhi, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana, Director Biopesticide Laboratories, Jalandhar and scientists from SKUAST Kashmir shall be addressing the participants.
The emphasis of the summer school shall be on ecologically based IPM in hill agriculture. Their steep slopes and sharp gradients render their ecosystem very fragile. Mountain societies are increasingly influenced and often threatened by globalization. The state of Jammu and Kashmir being unique in its topography represents the most ideal conditions for ecologically based IPM of insect-pests. The summer school organized by Division of Entomology shall go a long way in wide spreading the message of ecologically based IPM throughout the country for better crop production in a sustainable way with a minimum disturbance to the nature.
