| Saroori, Javed take stock of developments | | | Early Times Report Srinagar July 15: Minister for R&B, Mr. G.M.Saroori visited various areas of the city to take stock of ongoing macadamization works in Srinagar city. Minister of State for R&B, Mr. Javeed Ahmad Dar, Commissioner Secretary, PWD, Mr. Mehboob Iqbal, Chief Engineer, R&B, Kashsmir Mr. Mohammad Shafi Mir accompanied the minister. The minister visited Khanyar, Balgarden, Chattabal, Darishkadal, Bakshi Stadium, Rambagh and Chanpora roads. He was told that macadamization of 180 kms road length has been completed and work remaining 147 kms was in full swing. He was told that Rs. 4.50 crore have been expended so far in Srinagar city. Mr. Saroori impressed upon the engineers to speed up the work on all the projects and ensure usage of qualitative material as per the set specifications. Minister personally gauged the thickness of bituminous laid on the roads and asked the engineers to monitor the work to maintain quality control. He said that shifting in double and triple shifts would be revived soon, adding that macadamization would be started shortly in rural areas too. Latter, the minister reviewed the progress of the projects taken in hand by the various wings in R&B sector in the state. Besides Commissioner Secretary ,PWD Mr. Mehboob Iqbal, Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers of R&B, PMGSY, Mughal Roads, Mechanical Engineering Department were present in the meeting. The minister was told that under Bharat Nirman, 4276 Km road length would be constructed providing road connectivity to 840 inhabitations in the state. He was told that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for Rs. 1250 crore for construction of 1686 Kms roads have been submitted to Central Government for approval and allocation of funds, besides Rs. 14 crore for construction of 14 bridges. Apart from completing 554 works, Rs. 195 have been provided as compensation to those whose land has been acquired for construction of roads, Mr Saroori was informed. Regarding the functioning of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the minister was told that 48 snow cutters are functioning and two more sophisticated snow cutters are being processed to cater the needs of the department. Responding to a suggestion to set up a departmental hot-mix plant, Mr. Saroori asked the Commissioner Secretary to come up with a proposal for setting up the same at Srinagar. The minister appreciated the role of the department for making functional the hot-mix plant at Baramulla. He asked all the engineers to provide macadamization work to MED. Regarding the completion of the Mughal road, Mr. Saroori was told that the road has been made through for a single fair-weather lane and earth work formation for 63 kms double lane road has been completed. 14 kms portion of the road has been developed as all weather roads and Rs. 253.26 crore utilized on the project so far.
