| Campaign against regional discrimination missing | | | During the previous Assembly elections the BJP,the Panthers Party and the Congress candidates and the party leaders had promised that they would,if elected, intensify their campaign against regional discrimination. They had promised people to agitate in favour of setting up delimitation commission.Since January one has not witnessed any attempt on the part of leaders and legislators belonging to these parties for articulating their views on the matter. So far the party leaders and legislators have not organised rallies in support of their demand for end to regional discrimination. If one takes into account the support the Congress, the BJP and the Panthers parties received from the voters in the Jammu region one would not hesitate t elling them that they are members in the Assembly because people in the region had thought that they would fight for justice to the Jammuites.BJP has 11 members in the Assembly and all these MLAs are from the Jammu region. The three Panthers Party MLAs too ar e from Jammu.Out of 17 MLAs the Congress has about `13 from the Jammu region.Doesn't it demand that legislators belonging to these three parties have to first identify the ar eas where Jammu has r eceived a raw deal.By simply clamouring against discrimination leaders of these three parties cannot force the Government to correct the wrong. The Government is to be told the areas where the Jammu r egion has been discriminated against the Kashmir valley. These parties can prepare a white paper listing areas where the Jammuites have received a stepmotherly treatment.Nothing of this sort has happened because the Omar Abdullah led Government has not felt unnerved with the arguments from the champions of equal rights for the Jammuites. These champions should have made the Government aware of the poor share Jammuites have in the Government ser vices, poor share the region has in the state and central funds earmarked for various development projects. If the BJP has won 11 seats,a feat never achieved by it in the past,it has been able to do it on the slogan of ending regional discrimination. What has it done during the last six months. One may even ask the leaders of Amarnath Sangarsh Samiti whether they had fulfilled their commitment of raising peoples' problems instead of dabbling in politics. Those who hold the Samiti leaders responsible for deviation in their stated stand refer to Leela Karan Sharma's decision to contest the Lok Sabha election from Jammu-Poonch constituency. He lost the election so did the Samiti lose its credibility among he people.Time has come for the BJP,the Congress and the Panthers Party to fight against regional discrimination but peacefully. The leaders of these parties should not add to the problems that the state Government is faced with as a result of unrest in the Kashmir valley. If they fail to highlight peoples'problems they may face bigger problems in the near future.(
