| PM looks forward to trade ties with Pakistan via Wagah | | | Ludhiana, Sep 27 Close on the heels of talks with Pakistan
President Pervez Musharraf on the sidelines of the NAM summit in
Havana to collectively counter terrorism, Prime Minister Manmohan
Singh today said he looked forward to improving bilateral trade ties
via the Wagah border in Punjab.
''I must say that over the last two years we have taken a number of steps to improve relations with Pakistan and the people of Punjab have benefitted through better bus connections and trade opportunities,'' the Prime Minister said at a public meeting here. He said the infrastructure at Wagah was also being improved to make it a major trade point between India and Pakistan. ''I am hopeful that as the situation normalises, Punjab will once again become a major trading centre with Pakistan and central Asia,'' he said. Giving a green signal to the Amritsar-Haridwar Janshatabdi Express on the occasion in the presence of Railways Minister Lalu Prasad, Dr Singh said this new train would bring the sacred Ganga river closer to the holy city of Golden Temple. He said several other important Railway projects such as the Jammu-Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramullah rail link and the doubling of Jalandhar-Pathankot-Jammu Tawi Railway line would have a very positive impact on the economy of the border states of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister also inaugurated the Ludhiana-Chandigarh-Morinda Railway line through teleconference. This is the first ever rail link of the state's capital with other cities in the state and would drastically reduce the distance and travelling time between important cities of the state. |
