| PDP Welcomes High Court Intervention | | Shopian Fiasco | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, JULY 17: Peoples Democratic Party president Ms Mehbooba Mufti has expressed hope that the intervention of state High Court would lead to the ultimate aim of bringing to justice the perpetrators of Shopian atrocity. Welcoming the directions of the court Party President said these could to a great extent help in neutralizing the negative impact of the cover up operation witnessed in investigation of this case so far. While it should hopefully lead to justice for the victims and punishment for the offenders, an honest criminal investigation could also help in identifying the hidden hand behind the cover up attempts. Paying tributes to the people of Shopian for having shown great determination in pursuing the case, the Party President said in the process the area had undergone tremendous hardships for fifty days. The trading community had incurred huge losses while the students lost valuable academic time besides everybody facing a deep shock and trauma. To make things worse repeated police action against peaceful protesters had caused more damage to the credibility of the state administration and added to the woes of people. Ms Mehbooba Mufti said the High Court by its intervention had emerged as the last source of hope for the people of the state who have had to launch long and painful public protests even to get a most dastardly crime investigated. While this caused loss of more precious lives in police action and threw life out of gear particularly in Shopian, none of the arms of state except the High Court tried to reach out to the victims or those who demanded justice. The President said the party hoped that the High court intervention could mark a major step in curbing human rights violations but asserted that the atmosphere of mistrust and fear could not be improved without the government of India taking bold measures for solution of the problem. For this, she reiterated the call for revocation of AFSPA and demilitarization of civilian areas.
