| Congress leaders wash dirty linen in public | | | It is free for all as far as the bickerings in the state unit of the Congress are concerned. With growing rift between the Union Health Minister,Ghulam Nabi Azad, and the PCC President,Saif-ud-Din Soz,the internal disensions in the Congress in Jammu and Kashmir have touched a new high.Soz and Azad do not hesitate washing the party dirty linen in public. The problem in the state unit of the Congress is not something new.It has been there during the last 20 years. And the basic factor responsible for groupism in the Congress in the troubled state is the tussle between Ghulam Nabi Azad and the successive PCC heads.During the last 10 days Azad and Soz have been exchanging bitterness instead of pleasantries.Since Azad has been holding important posts, either as a member of the union cabinet or the AICC general secretary,he has had the habit of ensuring that the PCC Presidents play a second fiddle to him.Azad has been always keen to have his foothold in Jammu and Kashmir and for achieving it he has been patronising congress leaders who have been instrumental in making things difficult for the PCC Presidents. This is what happened to Ghulam Rasool Kar who failed to enlist support from the entire congress circle when he headed the PCC in 90's.He was succeeded by Mohd.Shafi Qureshi who has the image of being a hard task master but Azad saw to it that he too failed. His successors,Peerzada Mohd.Syed and Ch.Mohd.Aslam,were political minions. The two had smooth sailing as PCC heads because they did what they were told by Azad.Soz proved a different politician. The relations between Azad and Soz have not been cordial during the last six years. When Azad was the Chief Minister he had fears that his going was being made difficult by the Mufti who had support of Soz.When National Conference indirectly supported an independent candidate,Ghulam Hassan Khan, from Ladakh Lok Sabha constituency It was soz who sent a report to the Congress high command expressing deep displeasure of the state unit of the Congress against the National Conference. The relations between Azad and Soz witnessed further slide when the two did not see eye to eye with each other while selecting party candidates for the Assembly election and later for induction in the cabinet. It is in this connection that Ch.Mohd.Aslam has openly blamed Soz for having scuttled his chances for getting a cabinet berth. He says his name was in the list but at the final moment it was dropped. He is not totally correct. It was Dr Karan Singh who prevailed on Ms Sonia Gandhi to induct one R ajput in the cabinet and the dice was cast in favour of R.S.Chib.When the top leaders have started washing dirty linen in public the youngesters feel no restriction in imitating their seniors.Mohd.Sharif Niaz, who is sulking over his noninclusion in the cabinet, has alleged that G.M.Saroori,who was recently inducted in the ministry, had campaigned against the Congress candidates in Doda district in 2008 elections. As the level of crisis has enhanced Sonia Gandhi has invited two loyalists of Azad,Abdul Gani Vakil and Ch.Mohd.Aslam for talks in Delhi. It would be better for Sonia to instruct Azad not to meddle in the party affairs in Jammu and kashmir even if she replaces Soz by Ch.Aslam.
