| AWWA holds cancer detection camp at Udhampur | | | Early Times Report Udhampur, 17 Jul 2009 A cancer screening camp for wives of all ranks belonging to the Udhampur Garrison was organised under the aegis of Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA)Northern Command on 17 Jul 2009. This camp was conducted by the Medical Branch, HQ Northern Command and the Command Hospital with support from a Delhi based NGO ‘Roko Cancer’. The aim of this camp was to carry out early detection of breast and cervical cancer. The camp was conceptualised and inaugurated by Mrs Deepa Bhardwaj, who is the President, AWWA, Northern Command. The President AWWA emphasised on the increasing incidence of breast and cervical cancer and highlighted the benefits of this camp, as screening halved mortality caused by cancer. More than 300 ladies were screened on 17 Jul 2009. In addition all ladies were provided an opportunity to undergo general examination and routine blood testing for early detection of nutritional disorders. A health exhibition was also organised to familiarise the ladies with various preventive aspects of cancer and other commonly occurring preventable diseases.
The camp is being conducted over a period of three days from 17 Jul 09 to 19 Jul 09 so as to give an opportunity to the maximum number of ladies in the vulnerable age group of the Udhampur garrison to be screened.
