Early Times Report
Jammu, July 18: Director General Border security force (BSF) ML Kumawat on Saturday said that BSF jawans patrolling in porous Sir creek area along the Indian coastline with Pakistan will soon be given All terrain vehicles (ATV's) and flying boats to prevent entry of Pakistani fishermen and maintain better vigil in the area.
Addressing a media conference during his visit to Jammu frontier DG, BSF said , "ATV's will be part of the BSF in about one months time and besides that we are going to purchase flying boats as part of modernising border force for better border management".
He said, "we know the capabilities of terrorists groups and are fully geared up to tackle the threat from the militant groups to secure our frontiers"
He said, BSF men face difficulty due to marshy conditions in Sir creek area . "All terrain vehicles and flying boats will soon be procured for the jawans to maintain high degree of vigil in the area and prevent Pakistani fishermen from gaining entry inside Indian coastline with tacit help from Pakistani mariners".
The BSF officer said large parts of coastline on the Indian side remain marshy and inundated making it impossible for us to reach there on foot, vehicle or patrol boats."
"We had taken hovercraft and ATV’s for patrol duties and have been able to check infiltration from the Pakistani side," DG , BSF said.
Commenting on the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir DG,BSF said even though there has been a marginal decline in the level of infiltration from across the border and line of control yet launching pads and militants training camps remain intact.
"Pakistan needs to take a decisive action against them. In case Islamabad is serious about taking action against terrorist outfits in their own country, they must dismantle these camps," he told reporters here.
Asked about the number of such camps and locations across the border, he said "we need not go into their numbers and locations." The fact remains that these training camps are there and they need to be dismantled by Pakistani authorities, he added.
Pointing out that Pak rangers had built a number of structures including bunkers and observation posts across the border after the Mumbai attack, he said "we did not react to these developments as it would have given Pakistan an excuse not to deal with terrorists in that country".
Breifing media persons about adding more numbers in the BSF, he said that in the next week the first women battalion of about 1,000 personnel of the Border Security Force (BSF) will be inducted for combat duties alongside men in uniform. In all we are going to raise 29 new battalions adding at least 35,000 more men as part of our expansion plans.
The women, who are now undergoing training, will be commssioned on July 25, to be attended by Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram.
He said these women have been trained in weapon handling, intelligence, border management, sports, unarmed combat, frisking and guarding duties. The women, along with their male counterparts, will carry out searches and frisking at checkpoints and immigration points and on trade routes along the borders. “The women component is needed for the force, as our duty of guarding borders involves frisking women travellers, besides other relevant duties,” he said.
