| Chib inaugurates newly renovated Billiard hall | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JULY 19 -The Minister for Sports and Youth Services, Technical and Medical Education . R. S. Chib today said that sports infrastructure in the State needs to be upgraded throughout the State for J&K to make any mark in the field of sports, adding that unless the working of the department is systematized and instructions percolate to the implementers in letter and spirit, then only can visible change can be brought in the sector. The Minister said this after inaugurating the newly renovated Billiard hall at MAM stadium. Commissioner/Secretary, Technical Education, Mr. N. K. Verma, secretary, Sports Council, Director, Sports and Youth Services, President, Billiard association were present on the occasion. The Billiard hall is fully air-conditioned having three billiard tables and a brand new flooring. Billiard game is played with a master white ball and six coloured and 15 red balls which are sent into the pockets along the table by a stick. The hall was constructed in 1995 was showing visible signs of dilapidation after which its renovation work was taken up at a cost of Rs. 11 lakhs. A match was also played between Mr. Ajay pal and Mr. Somesh which was won by Mr. Ajay Pal. Addressing the sports lovers gathered to witness the match, Mr. Chib admitted that sports have been the most neglected field in the country and have been categorized into petty and smaller things. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi, “I have learnt many smaller things from my mother’s feet,” he said that one should not forget that smaller things are the ones that make a lot of difference. He said that it is sports which inculcate healthy competition spirit among youth which helps them in their later years. Recalling his personal experience during his visit to China last year before the Olympics, the Minister said that the amount of sports preparedness shown by China is a lesson for a country like India. He said that China have been successful in defeating the notion of American supremacy in sports by winning the maximum number of gold medals, adding that if there is a will, nothing can come in the way of our country as well as J&K to achieve excellence in sports. Mr. Chib remembered his personal experience during organization of sports events in the State and said that the years of neglect has inculcated a callous attitude among those involved in the promotion of sports in J&K. He stressed on overhauling the system, bringing more vigour in its functioning and a complete makeover of the infrastructure meeting international standards if the state wants to make its presence felt in the sports disciplines. He hoped that the department will work with great zeal and if atleast 5 percent of change is brought in its functioning, visible change will be seen in the position of State in sports field.
The Minister was also felicitated with mementos by J&K Sports Council.
