BGSBU smashes it head against stones as Govt looks other way

Early Times Report
Jammu, July 19: Out of sight out of mind may well describe the story of newly come up but well established Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University located atop a mountainous ridge in Rajouri district when it comes to funding and other support for infrastructure development.
As other Universities gear up to implement that recommendations of the sixth pay commission, Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University Rajouri is locked in the troubles of finding ways and means of keeping the existing show going. “Both neither the Wakf Board nor the Higher Education department is taking urgencies seriously and the files moved for urgent funds are gathering dust in the Secretariat”, said a top University officer who did not wish to be named.
To generate funds for its ambitious programmes and keep the existing faculties apace, the University has embarked on innovative ideas, as has been its precedence in the past also. In its latest ‘risk worth taking’, the BGSB University has launched Undergraduate courses. “It is a risk like smashing our heads against stones but we have taken it happily and with cool calculations”, said the University officer.
When contacted the Vice Chancellor of the University Masud A Chaudhary said, “instead of blaming anyone for paucity of funds we believe in creating opportunities out of challenges”. Asked to explain, Choudhary came up with a business management theorem: “We noticed that hundreds of shady institutions imparting technical education have come under the noose of laws but the urge among young students to obtain technical education is growing…this offers a two way opportunity and gives us the leeway to meet our challenges”.
The BGSB University feels that undergraduate technical courses will fetch it a good number of students from across the state, who are looking for high quality and credible education, and the University will get enough finds (realized out of fees) to mop up its resource crunch.
As a University official put it “we are smashing our heads against stones”, interestingly this is not first time when the BGSB University smashed its head against stones and emerged unhurt, of course, after achieving it set for. Two years back, when placed in similar situation, the University took a midsession ‘hasty’ decision of launching its College of Engineering and Technology (COET). The COET was supposed to come up in 100 days as the building construction work and faculties recruitment process began only when the admissions had been rolled out. Its story is very simple, said the Vice Chancellor, “by next academic session, the COET alone shall be able to fully fund entire salary bill of the University”.
The University is about to repeat same experience with the undergraduate courses which are much in demand. The decision was taken last week and the admission notice has been issued for the current session. Courses on offer are: BBA, BCA, Three Year Diploma Courses in Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Information Technology and Civil Engineering besides lateral entry to various Engineering streams. There are 60 vacancies for each faculty.

The Vice Chancellor Qureshi maintains that “the location of the Headquarters of our recently setup University is yet to be identified and notified….pending that decision, the University is in the process of preparing relevant statutes, regulations and ordinances for consideration by its competent authorities as and when they meet in the near future”.
