| Police to replace CRPF in phases, AFSPA will go | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Jul 19: Reiterating the state government's resolve to replace the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in the Kashmir Valley in phases, an official spokesman said Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has already taken up the matter of withdrawal of Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) with the Centre. Highlighting the achievements made during the first six-month rule of the coalition government, he said Mr Abdullah favoured the withdrawal of the AFSPA. Perhaps, this is for the first time that a Chief Minister in office eloquently talked of withdrawal of AFSPA in the state, he said. Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has assured the Chief Minister that the AFSPA issue has been flagged and will be discussed with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Defence Minister A K Antony. In fact, with the cooperation of the Centre, the government has already taken the bold decision to replace CRPF phase-wise with J&K police in the State.By ensuring presence of magistrates with police and security forces, the Chief Minister has taken 'bull by the horns' in dealing with law - and - order problems. It was during the tenure of the present government that an Army camp at Bomai was relocated for the first time in Kashmir.During the electioneering in Assembly and Parliamentary elections, the National Conference (NC) leaders, including Mr Abdullah, had announced to withdraw the A F P S A. Almost all separatist organisations, besides the main opposition party Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are also demanding withdrawal
