| Central University: Jammu region makes up mind for sustained agitation | | | Munish Gupta Jammu, July 20: Giving reflections of Jammu’s summer 2008 agitation, not only the City of Jammu but also entire region is fast gearing up for yet another agitation as confusion prevails from Srinagar to New Delhi on location of proposed Central University in Jammu and Kashmir.
While the winter capital city is breaking into regular protests, a delegation of some concerned people of Jammu rushed to New Delhi a couple of days back and had rounds of meeting with several central leaders including Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad and state Congress president Prof Saif-ud-Din Soz. Sources said that the opinion of central leaders also appeared split.
Central University Joint Action Committee today continued on its movement in support of the establishment of Central University in Jammu and held a protest demonstration in Jammu University. A large number of students and scholars of Jammu University assembled at Fountain Plaza of Jammu University where from their held a protest procession to University Main Gate where they torched the effigy of State Government and blocked the main road for about 25 minutes. They were raising slogans against the government and said that the students and scholars will not let the government to shift Central University sanctioned for Jammu to Kashmir.
Mohinder Pal Singh, members of the committee said that the Government advertisements for accommodation for Central University office in Jammu is all fraud the thing is that Government has pre-decided to shift it to Kashmir. He however opposed the government move to open two offices one in Jammu and one in Kashmir and said office should be in Jammu as decided earlier. He said that if Central University is shifted in Kashmir it will follow massive mass agitation responsible of which will be the State Government.
In order to further strengthen the students’ movement for restoration of Central University in Jammu and discrimination with Jammu at all levels, the Research scholars and students of Jammu constituted a united front under the name and style of Jammu Justice Movement (JJM).
Announcing this in a press conference here today Pushwinder Singh, president and Ranjeet Sharma, general secretary of the Movement said in view the discrimination being faced by the Jammu region in educational, political, employment, tourism, infrastructure development a united fight needed for delivering Justice for which have constituted a united front JJM.
They said that at present there is great resentment among the student community over the shifting of central university office sanctioned for Jammu to Kashmir, the movement will fight tooth and nail for the restoration of full fledged central university at Jammu.
“It was Union Government decision to give two central institutions by which Central University sanctioned for Jammu and IIM for Kashmir but it is unfortunate that Kashmir leaders could not digested the grant of central university to Jammu”, they added.
Giving a three days ultimatum to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to clear stand over this issue, Pushwinder Singh said, ‘after three days we will mobilize students community about the benefit of central university at district which will follow a vigorous agitation if government failed to do justice over this issue’.
When he asked about another front Central University Joint Action Committee, he said, ‘whether it is JJM or other Joint Action committee or political parties which support this issue, for all goal is only one Central University in Jammu and we would fight for it’. The leaders said that the movement will not stop till it is not taken to its logical conclusion by restoring the permanent functioning of the central university in the secular and cosmopolitan environs of the Jammu.
The office bearers announced included Sunil Sharma, Chairman, Rajinder Singh, Vikrant Singh, Vice presidents, Irfan Qureshi, Gunwant Singh joint secretaries, Mohd Arif, treasurer.
Further, even Jammu State Morcha (Progressive) has plunged into the issue today and stood in support of full fledge establishment of Central University in Jammu. Addressing media persons here today, Prof
Virender Gupta, president, JSM(P) alleged conspiracy of the NC-Congress coalition government to establish the Central University in Kashmir Valley instead in Jammu. He said that they wrote letters to the Union Cabinet HRD Minister, Kapil Sibal, Gulam Nabi Azad, MPsand MLAs belonging to Jammu region and approached the general public and the students to resist and thwart any such move on the part of the Government. Prof Gupta also alleged hidden agenda of sabotaging the proposal of the Government of India of opening Central University in Jammu province and intriguing to shift the proposed Central University to Kashmir Province. He influenced the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abdul Wahid, to open the temporary working office of the sanctioned Central University at Srinagar and to start the Post Graduate Classes in identified disciplines there from this year. JSM (P) demanded that Central University should only have one Campus and it should be immediately opened in Samba district, as earlier decided. He also demanded cancellation of the appointment of the present Vice Chancellor of the Central University.
