Musharraf does another U-turn, sings praises of PM`s sincerity over Kashmir
9/27/2006 8:03:21 PM

New York, Sept 27: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is sincere about wanting to resolve the over five-decade-long Kashmir dispute, feels President Pervez Musharraf clearly backtracking on his comments in his autobiography “In the Line of Fire”. The General had written that Dr Manmaohan Singh’s sincerity and flexibility were ebbing over Kashmir issue.

“Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has a sincere desire to resolve all outstanding issues including Kashmir,” the Daily Times quoted Musharraf as saying in his address to the annual Pehla Qadam gala organised here by the National Commission for Human Development.

He further went on say that the Havana joint statement contained “seeds for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute as well as Sir Creek and Siachen”.

Musharraf has described his fears that the Indian leader had fallen under the influence of New Delhi`s old guard.

The General had further said that “you need to be bold” to resolve such crises.

``The initial signs of sincerity and flexibility that I sensed in Manmohan Singh seem to be withering away,`` General Musharraf wrote in the memoir.

``I think the Indian establishment the bureaucrats, diplomats, intelligence agencies, and perhaps even the military has gotten the better of him,`` General Musharraf added in a passage he said was written in June.

Referring to U.S.President George W Bush`s role in South Asia, Musharraf said: “The US leader has asked us how he can contribute towards resolution of Pakistan-India disputes,” and added that Bush and hehad a complete understanding on regional and international issues.

On reports that there were differences between the Pakistan Army and him, Musharraf said nothing could be further from the truth.

“The army likes me and the army follows me. The military is with me,” the Pakistan President said.

“Pakistan and the United States have a broad-based relationship which encompasses economic, trade and a number of other areas. Pakistan is also poised to act as a bridge between Islam," Musharraf said.

He also said there were no problems in Balochistan.

“The government will not allow anyone to challenge the writ of the government. There is no problem at all in Balochistan; there will be no problem in Balochistan as a majority of the people want development,” he said.
