J&K sex racket: Court extends remand for four
9/27/2006 8:04:02 PM

Srinagar, September 27
A court in Srinagar on Wednesday extended by a week the judicial remand of four persons including a policeman arrested by the CBI in connection with the sex racket in Srinagar.
The arrested persons—policeman Absar Ahmad Dar, Hilal Ahmad Shah, Syed Altaf Hussain and Ajaz Ahmad Bhat—were presented before the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate MY Akhoon, who extended their judical remand till October 4.

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Wednesday adjourned proceedings of the sex scandal case and set Friday as the next date of hearing.

The case was listed for hearing by the division bench of Justices Hakim Imtiyaz Hussain and BA Kirhamni on Wednesday and the CBI was supposed to submit the third list of persons alleged to be involved in the case to the court.

However, the judges deffered the case till September 29 as the lawyers struck work in response to a strike called by the Kashmir High Court Bar Association to protest the death sentence of Mohammad Afzal in the Parliament attack case.

The CBI has so far arrested 18 people, including two former state ministers, an IAS officer, two police officers, a deputy inspector general of the BSF, an ex-additional advocate general, a hotel manager and the alleged kingpin of the racket.

The agency has filed two chargesheets against the 14 accused. The trial of the case was shifted to Chandigarh by the Supreme Court following an application by the arrested persons.
