Srinagar, Jul 22 : Assuring full support to Jammu and Kashmir to fill the gap between production and demand of livestock and poultry products, Dr V K Taneja, advisor to Planning Commission, today said the aid to state for this sector could be between Rupees 600 to Rupees 5000 crore.
But, he said, this all depend upon how the case was projected before the commission by the state government.
The State is importing Rs 1400 crore livestock and poultry products from different parts of the country, particularly northern state, annually to meet the requirements.
To help the state overcome the deficit in production and demand, Dr Taneja, who is also Vice Chancellor, Guru Angad Dev University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Ludhiana, has assured that Commission would go to any extent in helping the state to fill the gap between the production and demand of livestock and poultry products.
The aid could be between Rs 600 to Rs 5000 crores depending upon the state's ability to identify projects and schemes that could help in increasing the production and productivity of its livestock resources, he said addressing a select group of senior functionaries of Animal and Sheep Husbandry Departments here.
Dr Taneja is here on a brief visit to the valley to have a feel of the situation in the livestock sector and identify areas where investment was required.
He said the sector deserved a better deal as it was contributing 11 per cent to the state's GDP. He emphasised the need for better linkage with state Agriculture Universities to achieve six per cent growth rate in the sector.
