| Target in food grain production can be achieved by assured irrigation: Randhir | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 22: In a statement issued here today the former minister, Thakur Randhir Singh national president aromatic and medicinal plants growers association of India (AMPGAI) about 140 million hectors of land as net sown area and out of this around 57 million hectares of land is having some kind of assured irrigation i.e. around 37% of land is having assured irrigation while 63% of the land is dependent on monsoon. He said at president India is producing about 220 million tones of food grains and are self sufficient for the time being. The present population of 108 crores is likely to reach 132 crores by 2025 and further develop by 2050 and then onwards get stabilized. The growing population needs about 360 million tones of food grains by 2025 and around 426 million tones of food grains by 2050. He said the gap in food grain production can only be filed by providing assured irrigation, for which the planning and implementation has to commence from now onwards. The problem arising out of the inter state and inter religion conflict of interests leading to social disturbance. The decisions are taking political turns rather than practical and national interest. The demand for water for drinking purpose, industry is increasing pressure on irrigation sector. The conflicts for water are now extended from villages to the Supreme Court. Due to federal structure and the complexities of state departments and union ministries is assuming a serious dimensions. Recommendation by planning commission to complete 400 ongoing irrigation projects remains with any action.
