CM asks for setting up control room to meet any eventuality of monsoon

Jammu, July 24- Stressing on preparedness to meet any eventuality on account of monsoon, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed for setting up a control room in Jammu under the control and coordination of Divisional Commissioner.
Speaking at a meeting of divisional officers here today the Chief Minister said that administration should be alerted at all levels to remain at the beck and call of the people in any hour of need. “You should be responsive and prompt to the public calls”, he said.
The Chief Minister reviewed power, irrigation, drinking water, CA&PD and health sectors and asked the officers to deliver with highest degree sincerity and responsiveness.
Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand, Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma, Minister for Revenue Raman Bhalla, Minister for Industries and Commerce S. S. Slathia, Minister for Technical and Medical Education R. S. Chib, Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik, Political Advisor to the Chief Minister Devender Singh Rana and Advisor to the Chief Minister Mubarak Gul were also present on the occasion and projected the problems pertaining to power crises in Jammu.
Stressing on complete overhaul in power sector in the State, the Chief Minister called for streamlining the functioning of PDD by beefing up the response system to public queries. “The department’s answer to people on power curtailments should not be that there is no money for requisite infrastructure,” he said and added that instead of straight away dismissing the public demand on excuse of lack of grants, the concerned Chief Engineer should project the infrastructure requirements to the higher authorities and give positive response to public.
Abdullah said Principal Secretary, PDD will be asked to visit the region and conduct a comprehensive review of the reasons behind the power crisis so that steps can be taken to address the same at the earliest. He said that time has come when people of the state have to be prepared to pay for the power they are consuming; adding that complete transformation in the functioning is required to overcome the losses being faced in the power sector.
Reviewing the impact of delay in rainfall on agriculture sector, the Chief Minister was informed that the Kandi areas of the region have suffered extensive crop damage but in other belts, sowing for the kharief season is progressing smoothly after the rains in July. Omar directed the Divisional Commissioner to direct all the District Commissioners to prepare a contingency plan so as to meet any eventuality.
The Deputy Chief Minister highlighted the problem of inundation of villages situated close to the left and right bank of Pargwal island due to rise in the water level of river Chenab. He asked the Chief Engineer, Flood Control to keep senior engineers stationed at the island to keep 24 hour vigil on water level of the river.
The Chief Minister asked the officers to be vigilant and project the problems being encountered by them on ground to the government so that they can be addressed. He called for bringing greater accountability in the functioning so that people can perceive that administration is constantly at their service, adding that it is the priority of the government to ensure that general public is not subjected to unnecessary inconvenience due to delay in restoration of essential services.
