JAMMU/RAJOURI, JULY 24: Largest area of rural Jammu and entire Rajouri district are under acute water scarcity despite huge efforts made by the concerned department and arrival of monsoon. Reasons of suffering for both the areas are different and the remedies are also different. As far as Jammu rural areas are concerned the main reason of water shortage is unprecedented power cuts by the Power Development Department (PDD). While as reason for water scarcity is said to be the delay in monsoon and the arrangements by the concerned department.

“Whatever be the reason it is the people who are worst suffers even after paying dues in time to Public Health Department (PHE) and Power Development Department (PDD)”, said Sham Lal Sharma a resident and added PDD had done metering in half of the area and left half of the area un-metered in a design to save electricity for urban areas. He said that poles and wiring upon there is delicate as even a slight wind demolishes the whole structure which takes several days for repairing.

In Rajouri district all major sources the rivers, streams and hand pumps have dried up and people especially the women folk has to go from pillar to post to arrange drinking water for their families. "We are in trouble as there is water crisis as water almost has dried up in all the sources. Even hand pumps have dried up. There is no water," said Shabir Ahmed, a resident. Concerned officials acknowledge that there is shortage of water in the region which can be due to global warming but officials assured that some schemes have been planned which will bring relief to the residents of the area. “Both the ground and surface water sources have dried up. We are discussing several schemes with the minister, which will be taken up soon. In Hansala, we will divert 14-inch pipeline to the region as there is water depletion and scarcity," said Abdul Latif Chaudhary, District Executive Engineer, Rajouri.

Chief Engineer PHE V. K Abrol when contacted rejected the allegations of water scarcity in Rajouri district and said that recently whole arrangements has been supervised wherein no scarcity of drinking water was found besides due to arrival of monsoon various dried water sources have been reactivated. Commenting over dilemmatic scenario of Jammu rural Abrol said about 15 Tube-wells are feeding Muthi, Roopnagr, Bantalab and adjoining areas which could provide sufficient water supply provided uninterrupted electricity is available but due to 12 hours power cut in the area makes it difficult for the department to provide better services.
