NC’s twin campus feelers add fuel to fire; PDP creates history, takes Jammu cause
7/25/2009 12:45:57 AM
EARLY TIMES REPORT
Jammu, July 24: Even as the National Conference fielded its Jammu stalwart Ajay Sadhotra to gauge public mood on possibility of twin campuses of the Central University to earn sharp criticism, the most interesting player to join the fray is Peoples Democratic Party which has made a historic move by taking up Jammu cause –perhaps first time ever.
As government continued to grapple in dark over the location of Central University, hundreds of students today held a massive demonstration outside the Congress and National Conference headquarters and boycotted their classes in protest. Significantly, the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party rejecting the two campus move has lambasted the ruling Congress-National Conference alliance for adopting delay tactics in opening the proposed University in Jammu and threatened to come on roads if any attempt was made to shift it to Valley.
In a joint statement issued here today senior PDP leaders reminded that land for the proposed University has been already identified at Samba district and there was no reason to create confusion on this issue. It was during PDP-Congress regime that Central University was allotted to Jammu region and a team from Centre government along with the then Commissioner Secretary Higher Education had visited Samba district and selected land between Badhori and Rai Suchani for setting up of this University.

PDP leaders reminded the NC leader that Central University was allotted to Jammu region and IIM to Kashmir so government should immediately open office of the proposed University at Jammu without any delay.

Taking a dig at NC leader Ajay Sadhotra for his statement that location of the proposed university has not been decided, PDP leaders suggested NC leader that instead of giving such irresponsible and confusing statement he should rather go to the official record to correct himself. “As the land has been already selected so there is no question of shifting the same to some other place”, PDP leaders said and threatened that they would come on roads if any attempt was made to shift this University to other place, the statement added.

Coming down heavily on Ajay Sadhotra for calling agitating Jammu people as “disgruntled elements”, PDP leaders said that Sadhotra has “abused” people of Jammu, who have been fighting to get justice, by dubbing them as “disgruntled elements”.

PDP leaders reminded the people of Jammu that National Conference has always discriminated with this region. “Successive National Conference regimes are responsible for discrimination with Jammu region”, they said and reminded the people that it was only during the regime of Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that equal treatment was given to all the three regions of the State. They said that as a Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Mufti Mohammad Sayeed has set an example but treating all regions equally. They especially mentioned that from the year 2002 to 2005 equal number of colleges and Universities were opened in both the regions.

“When even National Conference attained power, people started raising voices of discrimination as this party believe in creating division between regions to remain in power”, they said.

Meanwhile hundreds of agitating students staged a protest in front of National Conference party headquarters here on Friday raising slogans against the MLC Ajay Sadhotra for his statement in which he had said that location of the central university has not been decided as yet and central committee headed by joint secretary of Union HRD Ministry was to decide about the location of the university.

The students under the banner of Jammu Justice Movement (JJM) today boycotted their classes in various degree colleges and then marched up to the office of the congress party to know the party’s stand on the issue.

Various student bodies have already joined the bandwagon to mount pressure on the state government against shifting of the campus of the central university from Jammu to Srinagar. A two day long signature campaign was also launched by the student bodies in the Jammu university campus to garner support of the common masses and intellectuals in support of their campaign. Various political parties including BJP and Panthers party are also supporting various student bodies and have lend their support to prevent shifting of campus from Jammu.

Students of GGM Science College, SPMR Commerce College and MAM College boycotted their classes and held a protest demonstration under the banner of Jammu Justice Movement (JMM) for the Central University in front of the Shahidi Sathal. The demonstrators moved in the form of a procession raising slogans against the shifting of Central University from Jammu to Kashmir. The protestors passed through Jewel Chowk, Vinayak bazar, Raghunath bazar and then ghearoed the National Conference party headquarters at the Residency Road. The agitating students were raising the slogans against Ajay Sadotra. The mob of the students was highly agitated and could not be controlled by the police personnel present on the scene and the furious students raising slogans against the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah tried to barge into the premises of NC headquarters.

The furious students then marched towards the Congress headquarters located in the same area and raised pro- Central University slogans .Pushvinder Singh President JJM warned the MLA's that if they do not raise the voice against the discrimination being meted out to the Jammu they shall face the people’s wrath.

Meanwhile, Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarathi Parishad (ABVP) State Secretary Suresh Ajay Magotra has strongly condemned the statement of NC MLC Ajay Sadhotra of two campuses of central university and said that ABVP will not let this happen at any cost and will continue their fight for establishment of Central University in Jammu.

He also announced to boycott classes in the colleges of the Jammu province from tomorrow in support of Central University in Jammu.

Addressing media persons here today, Suresh Ajay Magotra, state secretary, ABVP said that Kashmiris don’t want central forces in Kashmir but want central university.

He said that from tomorrow ABVP will boycott the classes and will organize protest demonstration in the colleges in favour of central university. He appealed the students and masses of Jammu province to come out and join hands to fight for their rights.

He informed that ABVP has already launched movement around tehsils over this issue.

Addressing media person here today, CUJAC organizing Secretary Ajay Taloor said that the students have lost faith on the NC leadership and asked the Chief Minister to clear his stand on the issue. He questioned that when no decision has been taken about the establishment of the University how the Vice Chancellor Abdul Wahid have issued advertisement notice in the newspapers seeking employment in the University.
