| Strike cripples life in Kashmir | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Jul 25 Life in Kashmir was paralysed today due to general strike called by breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) in protest against human rights violations and continued arrest of separatist leaders, including Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Shops and business establishments in Srinagar and its adjoining areas and some other major towns of the valley were closed and traffic was off the roads. The routine work in government offices, banks and other commercial establishments was also affected due to the strike. Colleges and other higher educational institutions wore a deserted look as students and teaching staff stayed away in response to the call. The educational institutions up to Higher Secondary were, however, shut due to summer vacation. Reports from Baramulla said a complete shutdown was observed in this and other major towns of north Kashmir with shops and business establishments closed and traffic off the roads. It said functioning of government offices was also affected due to the strike. Similar reports were also received from Anantnag and other south Kashmir towns. The Hurriyat has appealed to the people to observe a complete shutdown today to protest alleged continued human rights violations and arrest of separatist leaders. The amalgam also condemned the arrest of Geelani under Public Safety Act(PSA). It is to, mention that separatist leader Syed Ali Geelani was on Tuesday booked under the Public Safety Act (PSA) for calling "frequent strikes and protests" in the valley. The authorities have already booked other separatist leaders, including Shabir Shah, Muhammad Nayeem Khan and Asiya Andrabi, under the PSA
