| Dire need to shift in approach to meet environmental challenges; Altaf | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, JULY 25 The Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment Mian Altaf Ahmad on Saturday emphasized for a shift in approach from traditional forestry to pro people forestry, considering the growing requirements of timber, fodder and fuel wood. Minister was addressing officers of Forest and allied departments, faculty members and students at function organized by Social Forestry department to mark 60th Van-Mahotsava at Government Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry College R S Pura. The Minister said Forest department has a very significant role to play in view of the environmental threats that the world is facing today like climate change and global warming adding that on one hand the department has to meet the national objective of having thirty three percent of total area under the Forest cover and on the other it has to meet the growing demands of timber, fuel wood and fodder. He said the government is taking series of steps for improvement of environment and ecology in the state. He asked the officers of different wings of the departments to work in co-ordination, so that the benefits of different schemes of the government reach the local populace. He reminded the Social Forestry Department of its responsibilities in increasing the green cover and meeting the bonafide requirements of the people especially in rural areas. Earlier, in his inaugural address, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest I. A. Khan gave a brief account of activities of various wings of forest department. He said that about 10,000 hctrs of forest land had been diverted for non-forestry purpose during the last ten years for which funds had been received for compensatory afforestation. He further said that detailed project reports for undertaking compensatory afforestation would be implemented very soon to compensate for loss of the forestland
