| Locating Central University | | Higher Education Minister faces wrath of agitating students | | Students continue to boycott classes, disrupt traffic on Highway on CU issue Munish Gupta Jammu, July 25 The Minister for Higher Education Abdul Gani Malik had to face wrath from the agitating students who were protesting against shifting of Central University to Kashmir. As soon as the minister visited the Government College for Women at Gandhinagar, the agitating activists of ABVP along with other students made their entry into the campus and shouted slogans against the Chief Minister and forced the Minister to come out from the meeting hall. Though the police contingent deployed at the college tried its level best to control the agitating students but all in vain. The Minister was escorted out of the meeting room and agitating students virtually ghearoed him and expressed grave concern over the manner in which the issue of setting up of central university has been hijacked. The agitating students said that they won’t allow any move to shift the proposed University to Kashmir and warned of dire consequences if the ruling alliance detracted from the early decision of setting up Central University at Jammu and IIM in Kashmir. The minister made desperate bids to pacify the agitating students and even apprised them about the decision taken by the Chief Minister to open two campuses of the central university in the state. Director Colleges N D Wani was accompanying the Minister when students forcefully gained access inside the college campus despite heavy deployment of police force. Meanwhile, the agitating student bodies which continued to boycott their classes staged protest demonstrations inside their college campuses and later staged similar demonstrations outside Science College and MAM College and on the University road to express their anguish over the proposed move of the state government to shift the central university from Jammu. The students raising anti-government slogans demanded that the state government should come out with a serious response over the issue. In Udhampur district the students of Degree College held demonstration in college premises in the main town and burnt effigy of chief minister Omar Abdullah. Interestingly, chief minister Omar Abdullah during a function at Billawar in Jammu on Friday had dispelled apprehensions about location of the central university and Indian Institute of Management in the state saying that the Centre has granted these institutions to Jammu and Kashmir without identifying the locations. In the meantime the Jammu State Morcha Progressive while commenting on the Chief Minister’s statement that he has requested the Government of India to open two Central Universities, one each at Jammu and Kashmir, has questioned that why is the CM not asking for such an arrangement for other institutions that are coming up or have come up only in the Kashmir Valley. As per the decision of the Government of India, an Indian Institute of Management campus is also to be opened in the state along-with this Central University. Prof Virender Gupta President JSM has asked Omar Abdullah that if he believes in equitable treatment to all the regions he should have also requested for opening of two Institutes of Management, one each in Kashmir and Jammu as well. The decision about the opening of Central University cannot be taken in isolation; it is linked with the opening of the Indian Institute of Management, he said. People of Jammu region would be satisfied if out of the two establishments sanctioned by the Government of India one is opened in Jammu and one in Kashmir region. If it is a question of asking for two Central Universities then there should be two IIM’s one each in Jammu & Kashmir regions also. For providing equitable treatment and justice to Jammu region, the JSM demanded opening of NIT / Regional Engineering College and Post Graduate Medical Institute (which started functioning in Srinagar in 1987) and other such single institutes at present working only in the Valley. If this is done then all Jammuites would feel that there is an equitable treatment with them too and Omar Abdullah’s statement would be taken in right perspective. Till such concrete steps are taken on ground these statements would be misleading and would not remove the mistrust. The students of the GGM Science College, SPMR College and MAM College today boycotted their classes under the banner of Jammu Justice Movement (JJM) for Central University and came out on the roads to protest against the misleading statements of the CM Omar Abdullah and Ajay Sadhotra. The agitating students burnt the effigy of the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in front of the SPMR Commerce College. The protesters were addressed by the JJM leaders who urged the government to desist from giving the misleading statements regarding the establishment of the Central University. Meanwhile, the dharna started by the JJM activists outside the GGM Science College near the Shahidi Sathal entered the fourth consecutive day today. In another development the girl students of the GCW Gandhi Nagar boycotted their classes today under the banner of the JJM and came out from their college in large numbers and raised the slogans against the state government. The gathering was addressed by Sunil Sharma who reiterated that the state government should make its stand clear on the issue of the Central University. He further said that the administration should not take the people of Jammu for granted and stop from adopting the discriminatory attitude towards the Jammu region. Pratap Singh, the JJM leader addressing the gathering warned Omar Abdullah and Ajay Sadhotra to refrain from making confusing statements regarding the central university and its status .He also warned that if the administration continued with same off the cuff remarks regarding the status of the central university then the students are ready to make sacrifices and shed the last drop of their blood to bring the Central university to the Jammu region. The other leaders of the JJM who addressed the students at various places include Virender Singh, Abhay Sharma, Sumit Gupta, Sahil Chaudhary, Ashutosh and Sanjay Sharma. In the evening the district administration called on the leaders of the Jammu Justice Movement to discuss the present scenario regarding the central University. In the meeting the JJM leaders made their presentation regarding the establishment of the Central University in the Jammu. JJM demanded that the Central university should be established permanently in the Jammu region as soon as possible and the recruitment which has been made for the Central University should be cancelled immediately and all other recruitment advertised should be cancelled till the permanent establishment of central University in Jammu region. They also demanded removal of Prof .Wahid Quereshi as Vice Chancellor of Central University for his dubious role. They said that our movement will not stop till our goal is achieved and Central University is established in Jammu. They are committed to take the agitation to its logical conclusion and the JJM is ready to any sacrifice for the said cause. Administration heard their demands patiently and assured that they will convey these demands to the concerned authorities. The prominent leaders who attended the meeting included Pushvinder Singh, Ranjeet Sharma, Sunil Sharma and Vikrant Singh Meanwhile activists of Jammu Justice Movement (JJM) under the leadership of Mr. Rajinder Singh (Munna), Vice President, JJM and Gunwant Singh, Joint Secretary, JJM held a massive protest demonstration at Vijaypur and burnt the effigy of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his discriminatory statements regarding the establishment of Central University in Jammu Region. The large number of people participated in the protest raising slogans “Omar Abdullah Hai Hai”, “Central University Jammu Lao “.
