| Army celebrates Operation Vijay; pays tributes to martyrs | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 26- The tenth anniversary of ‘OPERATION VIJAY’ was celebrated in Drass by Northern Command to commemorate the victory in the Kargil War in 1999. The event was celebrated with much fanfare on two consecutive days. ‘OPERATION VIJAY’ was the Indian Army’s action to evict Pakistani intrusion in Drass, Kargil and Batalik sectors which was launched in May 1999 and is a saga of valour and sacrifices. The celebrations were attended by the former Chief of Army Staff, General (Retd) VP Malik, Army Commander, Northern Command, General Officer Commanding, Fire and Fury Corps, General Officer Commanding, Forever in Operations Division and host of others senior officers from the army. The event also saw large attendance from Veer Naris, Next of Kin of martyrs, War Veteran army personnel. The media personalities who had covered the war were specially invited to grace the occasion. The event opened with a presentation on OPERATION VIJAY at Umbala yesterday. A Polo match was also organized between Ladakh Scouts and Drass Polo Club which was keenly contested and finally won by Ladakh Scouts. This was followed by breath taking display by the army paratroopers, an entertaining and absorbing dog show and the Khukri dance by the gallant Gorkhas. On the second day of the celebrations today the proceedings opened with wreath laying ceremony at Drass War Memorial by the Chief Guest, Staff, Gen VP Malik, former Chief of Army Staff; Lt Gen P C Bhardwaj, Nothern Army Commander; and a host of other dignitaries. Colour was added to this solemn ceremony by the Army Aviation helicopters which dropped petals from the sky and carried out a majestic fly past. Next in line was the Sainik Sammelan by the chief guest, honoring of the Veer Naris and Next of Kin of the martyrs. This was followed by an equipment display and photo exhibition aiming at showcasing the equipment used by own forces and captured from the enemy during the war. A barakhana was organized for the troops and the guests. In the evening, Memorial Service was performed by beating the retreat followed by a candle light vigil and lighting of the recaptured locations. The event was celebrated with military precision and was a modest way of paying homage to the martyrs and remembering the contribution of units and formations which had participated in the war.
