| Need to revamp library services, operations: Prof Punjabi | | 2-day workshop begins at KU | | EARLY TIMES REPORT Srinagar, July 27- The Kashmir University vice-chancellor, Prof Riyaz Punjabi on Monday called for revamping of different libraries in Jammu and Kashmir to meet the growing requirements of students, scholars and teachers. Addressing students and academics in the campus, Prof Punjabi said, “There is a call for revisiting and revamping the library operations and services in Jammu and Kashmir. This has become challenging with sizeable growth of degree and professional colleges in the state.” He was speaking at the inaugural function of the two-day workshop on “Modernization of College Libraries in J&K” organized by the varsity’s department of Library and Information Sciences. “There is need to sensitize the civil society about the importance of information in the present world. Information today is power. So we need to devise a good policy and make this information available to people in an easy way,” said Prof Punjabi, who presided over the function. He said it was a challenge to equip the college libraries with infrastructure and manpower. “So we also need to focus on that. We want more and more students, scholars and teachers to have easy access to information. This will enable them to update their knowledge on day to day basis which will ultimately benefit the student community at large,” Prof Punjabi said. In his keynote address, Dr H K Kaul, Director Development Library Network (DELNET) said there were 54,000 libraries in India, but many were them were not in a good shape. “The library professionals have to learn the new tools of social networking,” he said, adding, “They have to comply with the international standards to receive and impart information.” Kaul dwelt at length over the importance of libraries in the present world. “Libraries are treasure houses of knowledge and our libraries have to be knowledge workers,” he said. The KU registrar, Prof S Fayyaz Ahmad, said the library professionals and stakeholders will have to work hand in hand in making the information easily available to the users. “I am happy to observe that our university is working hard in that direction,” he said. The head, department of Library and Information Science, Prof S M Shafi, said the workshop was aimed at reaching out to the library fraternity with the latest trends in the field. “We have ventured this time to reach out to college librarians to upgrade the skills of the library professionals,” he said, adding, “This will enable us to provide better services, acquire and share resources and build a strong base for networking and resource sharing in today’s knowledge driven society.”
