| Mir directs early assessment of losses in J&K due to hailstorm | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 27: Minister for Agriculture, Ghulam Hassan Mir today directed for assessment of losses incurred due to yesterday’s hailstorm in many parts of the valley. He asked the departments of Revenue, Agriculture and Horticulture to undertake a joint exercise of assessment of losses within a short period so that the affected farmers are provided relief at the earliest. The Minister was chairing a meeting of officers to enumerate the measures being taken by the Government for the rehabilitation of the affected orchardists and farmers. Minister of State, Agriculture, Javid Ahmad Dar, Principal Secretary, Agriculture, Sonali Kumar and other senior officers were present in the meeting. The Minister also directed for conducting a survey to assess the losses caused to crops in Jammu province due to drought. The Minister was told that horticulture industry has suffered main losses in the province. Mir asked for activating the Calamity Relief Fund (CRF) and sought details of the fund and areas covered under the same. He also asked for enlisting attacks by wild animals on orchids and cattle for providing relief under CRF which have increased over the years. He asked the officers to take up the issue with Wildlife department for any groundwork in this regard. The Minister also sought details of the relief provided and the surveys conducted of the hailstorm which swept Baramulla and Kupwara areas in May this year.
