| High-tech facilities in fruit mandis in J&K: Sham | | Govt to approach Centre for relaxation in guidelines, being a hilly State | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, July 27: To create positive environment for the fruit growers of the State to compete in the national market, the Government would upgrade necessary infrastructural facilities including high-tech facilities like cold storage, proper marketing and transport facilities at various destinations and fruit mandis of the State. This was stated by the Minister for Horticulture during an interactive meeting with the fruit growers and traders of Kashmir Valley. The Members of the fruit industry apprised the Minister about various problems being faced by them in marketing their produce to various parts of the country. They suggested various measures to improve and streamline the existing set up, which included upgradation of infrastructure like necessary backup of cold storage, and other facilities so that farmers become self-reliant in their business ventures. They also suggested regular interaction between traders and government representatives to remove various bottlenecks coming in the way of their smooth functioning. Saying that horticulture is the main stay of the economy of Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister maintained that government will do whatever possible for the betterment of this sector. He said that various measures are in the pipeline and results would be visible on ground shortly. He said that government is planning to develop three main mandis of the State, including Sopore mandi, Parimpora mandi and Narwal mandi as high-tech with necessary back up of cold storage and other allied facilities for the traders so that they can compete with the other States. Sharma further said that he has already spoken to his counterparts in Uttaranchal and Himachal Pradesh and is trying to make a strong case for getting relaxation in the existing guidelines of Horticulture Technology Mission and other schemes keeping in view the topography and other conditions of the hilly States including Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the matter will be taken up with the Union Agriculture Minister for necessary amendments in the para-meters laid down in these centrally sponsored schemes, he added.
