| Snatching mike from Speaker’s table shameful: Sagar | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, JULY 27: Terming today’s unfortunate incident of snatching the mike from the Speaker’s table by PDP Legislative party leader, Ms Mehbooba Mufti as shameful violating the sanctity of the august House. Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Mohammad Sagar said that the opposition has every right to raise any issue but the occasion was not fit for the same. While briefing the media about the incident after concluding of today’s legislative business, he said that irresponsible behaviour of the PDP leader was without any provocation and there was no reason to snatch the mike. Sagar said that on the first day of Assembly session, obituary reference is a tradition and a custom of parliamentary working on which no business is conducted. He said that PDP has no real issue to raise in the House and they are resorting to adventurism as they are not concerned with public welfare and interest. The Minister said that the six legislators in whose memory the obituary reference was going to be held had worked all their life to strengthen the democratic institutions and to create such a scene is disrespect both to the House as well as to the departed members. Sagar made it clear that the present government is more keen to raise Shopian and other related issues in the House and have full discussions on the same and opposition should not feel shy in having open debate in the House. He said that the senior member of the House M. Y. Tarigami while condemning the behaviour of the PDP member has termed the incident as unfortunate. He said everybody is at liberty to raise issues in the House but in a dignified way. He said the one month long session would be providing ample opportunities for the opposition to raise their issues. Today soon after the House started its business today, the PDP Members joined by Panthers party MLAs disrupted the proceedings and created ruckus. In the process, the PDP Members led by Mehbooba Mufti defying the Speaker’s directions to remain silent during obituary references, came into the well and snatched the mike from the Speaker’s table attempting to throw the same. The attempt was, however, foiled when lady marshals escorted Mehbooba Mufti and the agitating members outside the House following direction by the Speaker. Taking strong notice of unruly behavior, the Speaker said that House is the supreme constitutional body and its honour is required to be maintained at any cost. He said that all issues can be discussed and debated in a constitutional manner alone not by resorting to un-parliamentary behavior or browbeating the Speaker. The Speaker also vowed to maintain complete impartiality, saying every MLA would be allowed to seek replies from the government through proper way. He cautioned MLAs against disrupting the proceedings in the House. “Nobody will be allowed to dishonor the House through indecent behavior”, he said adding every MLA must maintain proper decorum and decent behavior while participating in the Legislative business.
