Improve cordial ties through bilateral trade
7/27/2009 11:24:02 PM
Notwithstanding the fact that of late India faces threat from Bangladesh as far as infiltration of militants, trained in camps,is concerned, the Indian investors have started taking keen interest in investing in he 38-year old country that is known for political and climatic instability. The current Indian foreign direct investment has touched 460 million dollars. This figure is expected to shoot up with more Indian business houss looking for investing on setting up industrial units and other business establishment in Bangladesh. The big industrial guns, including Tatas and Amabanis were keen in investing in Bangladesh where the market potential of the goods produced in their companies was quite high.Since Bangladesh has not witnessed any industrial revolution the Indian investors have developed interest in establishing industrial units in that country. So far about 200 foreign direct investment and joint venture projects from India have been registered in Bangladesh.Out of these registered uniots about 65 units are in production. With more units getting established Delhi is expected to secure a comprehensive economic cooperation for enhancing bilateral trade between Bangladesh and India.Political analysts are of the opinion that once the bilateral trade agreement was signed it would give new dimensions to the Indo-Bangladesh relations. This is necessry after reports have revealed that some Pakistani agencies, that were engaged in aiding terrorism in India, had established bases in Bangladesh where poor Bangla youths were being lur ed to militancy. These youths were being paid handsome sums of money which encourages them to join terrorist groups.Besides this some militants, trained in Pakistan and PO,are sent to Bangladesh on valid travel documents and from Bangladesh they sneak into the Indian territory.Once the business community of the t wo countries join hands in setting up industrial units in joint collaboration it is bound to remove mistrust that has been developed in the mind of average Bangladeshi after the 1971 war between India and Pakistan that gave birth to Bangladesh which used to be part of Pakistan. And some of the Pakistani political leaders are on record saying that aid to terrorism in Jammu and kashmir was part of Islamabad's plan of avenging balkanisation of Pakistan in 1971.No doubt Delhi and Islamabad are trying to build bridges between the two sides it would be in the interest of India if it succeeded in developing cordial relations with Bangladesh through bilateral trade. India has unfriendly neighbours in China and Pakistan and it cannot afford to have an unfriendly Bangladesh.Again in the interest of India's security and peace friendly relations with Bangladesh were necessary.Once such r elations develop Bangladesh may be a bigger gainer than India.
