Is the House inauspicious?
7/29/2009 12:07:17 AM
Early Times Report
Jammu, July 28: Counting his achievements, the then Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad would always say that he completed what was initiated by Sheilkh Mohammad Abdullah –the new legislature complex in Srinagar. Incidentally, Azad had to resign as Chief Minister and his government had to fall from grace within 24 hours after he inaugurated the master-piece assembly complex on the evening July 6, 2009.
A year later, the same month and same legislative complex –a different Chief Minister but nearly same situation: the new Legislative Complex has certainly proved unlucky for the government, claims are being made in political and official circles.
Interestingly, the main Opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has played an active role in dislodging both the Chief Ministers.
The month-long budget session started yesterday in the new house which also witnessed protests from members of Opposition parties.
The PDP members were marshalled out of the house on the directions of Speaker Mohammad Akbar Lone after they stormed into the well of the house, demanding arrest of those involved in the Shopian double murder and rape case.
The situation was not different even today as PDP and Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) members were on their feet demanding that they should be allowed to speak on some important issues.
The Speaker restored order with the announcement that immediately after the Question Hour, the members would be allowed to speak.
However, the House witnessed an uproar soon after the Question Hour with the PDP and ruling National Conference(NC) members shouting at each other when former Deputy Chief Minister Muzaffar Hussain Baig alleged that Mr Abdullah was involved in a sex scandal and his name figures at serial number 102 in the list of accused.
Abdullah then announced his decision to quit the post till his name was cleared by an Inquiry Commission. "I am going to the Raj Bhavan to submit my resignation," he said.
Azad, his predecessor, had also announced in the House in July last year that he was submitting his resignation. It was during the first sitting in the house, construction of which was completed in record one year after being abandoned for several decades. The complex was inaugurated a day before Mr Azad resigned from his post. The PDP had forced him to quit to resign after it withdrew support to his ministry on the Amarnath land row issue
