| Rape cases witness surge in J&K | | |
AGENCIES Srinagar: Crimes in the Jammu and Kashmir have seen a surge in the last two decades with rape cases hovering above 200-hundred mark in last several years, reveals the latest survey conducted by the directorate of economics and statistics. According to the survey, there is an increasing assault of sexual nature against the women with 169 cases surfacing in 2001 and 288 in 2007-08. The number has hovered in 200-mark from 2003 onwards, recording 211 in 2003, 218 in 2004, 201 in 2005, 250 in 2006 and 288 in 2007. Reports reaching said that the survey, aimed to help the state government to formulate new policies and plans, says that Baramulla district in north Kashmir tops the list of rape cases followed by Kupwara, Pulwama and Doda districts, with 35 cases each during the later year. Budgam and Leh districts recorded the least rapes, registering 5 and 4 respectively. Not only rape cases, other crimes have also witnessed a surge. According to the Data, state has seen most number of non-negligent manslaughter in year 2001, recording 1075 murders followed by 1048 the next year, 2002.However, with the ebbing of violence in past several years, the murders have shown a decline from 939 in 2003 to 318 in 2007-08. Another crime, robbery offenses have also increased from 34 in 1985 to 111 in 2007 while the statistics put the highest rate in 1996 with 283 cases. In 2007, the survey says that Srinagar—summer capital of the state, has witnessed most robberies with 29 while Pulwama district in south Kashmir follows Srinagar with 23 robberies recorded. Kidnapping and abduction cases in the state have also shown upward trend over these years, recording 758 in 2007 from 544 in 1985. Off late, there have been increased voices for curbing the ever growing crimes in the society with religious scholars and academics stressing for immediate need to arrest the deterioration in the society. Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference and Valley’s chief Cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq during his last Friday sermon in historic Jamia Masjid called for reforms in the society. He urged parents and intelligentsia to show response to what he termed as growing threat to our society. City police Chief— Senior Superintendent of Police Srinagar—Javed Riyaz Bedar also urged people to corporate with police as he vowed to rid off society from the crimes particularly the drug menace and other crimes.
