| 48 hours after ‘resignation’, Governor tells CM to work vigorously | | Omar rushes to Hazratbal for prayers, PDP points fingers at Raj Bhawan | | ZAFAR CHOUDHARY | 7/30/2009 10:54:24 PM |
| Jammu, July 30: More than 48 hours after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah wrote to the Governor NN Vohra to accept his ‘resignation’ if the charges leveled against him by opposition Peoples Democratic Party leader Muzaffar Hussain Baig were true, the Raj Bhawan has advised the former that there are no basis for his seeking to resign and, therefore, he should vigorously devote himself to discharge of his responsibilities. The Governor, who is away in New Delhi, sent this communication to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in Srinagar who rushed straight to Hazratbal shrine and Mausoleum of his grandfather Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah for prayers. Official spokesman for the Chief Minister described it as “Governor’s communication proving the Chief Minister innocent”. However, the opposition Peoples Democratic Party has cast aspersions on the Raj Bhawan and questioned how the Governor was able to determine and examine an issue in barely 48 hours which the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Courts, within and outside Jammu and Kashmir, could not do in last four years. “This (Governor’s communication) has the potential of bringing the highest constitution authority of the state also into controversy”, said a PDP spokesman. According to an official spokesman both for the Chief Minister and the Raj Bhawan, “in furtherance to the allegations leveled against the Chief Minister in the Legislative Assembly and the letter that Shri Omar Abdullah had presented to the Governor on 28th July 2009, the Governor has had the matter inquired into through the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. The Governor, Shri N. N. Vohra has advised the Chief Minister that, based on the information supplied to him by the Union Home Ministry, there is no basis for Shri Abdullah seeking to resign. Accordingly the Governor advised the Chief Minister to most vigorously devote himself to discharging responsibilities of Chief Minister, Jammu and Kashmir”. Reacting to the Governor’s communication, a PDP spokesman said, “the advice of the Governor NN Vohra to Omar Abdullah to “vigorously devote himself” as the chief minister has brought no qualitative change in the farcical situation created by the resignation drama”. The spokesman of the party said in a statement that the communication had only acknowledged that Omar had never in fact tendered his resignation as was sought to be made out through media. He said that it was only natural that there was no mention of its resignation by the governor in his letter to the chief minister. The spokesman said that Raj Bahawan had apparently accomplished in 48 hours what the state police, CBI and courts in and outside Kashmir had not been able to do in four years. This, he said, had the potential of bringing the highest constitution authority of the state also into controversy. A handout issued by the state Information Department said that the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has expressed gratitude to the people of the state as well as his colleagues and coalition partners, who stood behind him in the difficult times. He said the blessings of the people have given him strength to come out of the crisis. “I believe in pious political ethics, upright character and moral principles”, he said adding his conviction is that only a person with unblemished character has moral right to hold such positions wherefrom he can serve people with full devotion and sincerity. “I firmly believe that those who resort to mudslinging get themselves exposed and the present event has not only proved my belief but also cemented it further”, he said.
