Police officials’ DNA doesn’t match with Shopian rapists
CBI’s FSL goes for cross-checking

Early Times Report
SRINAGAR, Jul 31: Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) of Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in New Delhi has completed the DNA profile of all the four detained J&K Police officers and begun the cross-checking procedure as it has not matched with the people whose spermatozoa had been found in the vaginal smear of the two young women raped and found killed in Shopian on May 29/30 last.

Informed sources revealed to Early Times that the DNA profiling, which was conducted under orders of a Division Bench of Jammu & Kashmir High Court after collecting blood samples of four Police officials, has established in stage one of the producer that none of them was involved in rape-cum-murder of two young women whose death has caused mayhem all over Kashmir valley.

Twenty-five-year-old married woman, Neelofar Jan, wife of Shakil Ahmed Ahangar of Bogam Shopian and 17-year-old unmarried sister of Shakil Ahmed Ahangar, Asiya Jan, had been found dead in Rambiara nullah in Shopian during the night intervening May 29 and May 30 last. In the wake of unprecedented uproar over the twin murder and rape, Omar Abdullah’s coalition government has not only suspended---and subsequently arrested under High Court orders---four key Police officials posted in Shopian but has also affected massive reshuffle in J&K Police.

Then SP Shopian, Javed Iqbal Matoo, Dy SP Rohit Baskotra besides then SHO Shopian, Shafeeq Ahmed and the Investigating Officer, Sub Inspector Gazi Abdul Karim have been taken into custody and subjected to custodial interrogation and DNA profiling after they were charged with having destroyed vital circumstantial evidences and handled the situation in unprofessional manner. Over the accusations of residents of Shopian and High Court Bar Association, which had filed the PIL in J&K High Court, all the four Police officials had been initially shifted but ultimately placed under suspension and arrested by Police.

After they failed to get relief and bail from Supreme Court of India, the detainees have moved applications through their counsels with the court of District and Sessions Judge Shopian, who has completed hearing of argument from different parties today and reserved the judgment till August 6th. NC-led coalition government had engaged two of the country’s most expensive lawyers, including Harish Salve, in addition to its permanent counsel in New Delhi to ensure that the detainees did not succeed in getting any relief or bail.

Sources said the DNA profiling of all the four detained Police officials has tested negative. However, its results would be communicated to J&K High Court only after completing two subsequent procedures of cross-checking which is said to be a formality. Sources said that in over 99% cases, the first procedure remains unchanged. Sources said that the final results could be made available to the court next week.
