| High level committees to watch NH widening | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 1: The Government has constituted two high level committees to monitor issues related to the upgradation of National Highway 1A running from Lakhanpur to Leh to Uri in North Kashmir. There will be one state level committee headed by the Chief Secretary and one divisional level committee headed by the Divisional Commissioner Jammu. The state level committee will coordinate and monitor all issues related to the upgradation of National Highway 1A under the National Highways Development Project Phase II. The Divisional Level Committee shall monitor monthly status of land acquisition, disbursement of compensation and shifting of utilities etc. the state level committee shall be serviced by the PWD while the divisional committee shall be serviced by Chief Engineer R&B. It is pertinent to mention here that NHDP Phase II was approved by CCEA in December 2003 at an estimated cost of Rs.34,339 crore (2002 prices) comprises mostly North-South-East-West Corridor (6,161 km) and other National Highways of 486 km length, the total length being 6,647 km. The total length of Phase II is 6,647 km. According to a GAD order, besides Chief Secretary, the Principal Secretary PHE, Principal Secretary PDD, Commissioner Secretary R&B, Commissioner Secretary Forests, Divisional Commissioners of Kashmir and Jammu, Secretary Revenue and Project Director NHAI shall be the members of state level monitoring committee. Similarly the divisional level committees shall be headed by the Divisional Commissioners concerned while Chief Engineers EM&RE, Chief Engineer R&B and the concerned Deputy Commissioners shall be the members.
