Additional troops moved in Jammu as CU stir picks up
MUNISH GUPTA8/1/2009 10:28:52 PM

Jammu, Aug 1: The government has stationed 300 additional troops on law and order duty as Jammu region is heading for yet another major strike on the controversy surrounding the establishment of Central University.
Efforts are on to launch a decisive battle once for all to end the growing discrimination with Jammu region. Strategies are being worked out to form a common platform to pursue and agitate on the case of Central University.
To give new teeth to the on going agitation Justice (Retd) Paviter Singh was today appointed as Convener of Central University Andolan which is spearheading the agitation on CU issue. His appointment was formally announced by the members of CUA during the meeting of its core committee members.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh said that since the issue is of serious nature as such “we have to take all organizations into confidence for launching a decisive battle from a common platform”.
Appealing all the Jammu based leaders to come on the single platform to raise the voice for Central University issue, Secretary CUA Mohinder Pal Singh Pandu warned that if these leaders fail to come on the common platform they will have to face the wrath from the students.
He said had these leaders raised this issue in the state legislature the students would not have been forced to come on the streets on this vital issue which has a great bearing for the Jammuties.
The meeting was attended by the all the members including Brig. Suchet Singh Convener SAYSS , Suresh Magotra, Sunil Sharma and Mohinder Paul Singh Pandu secretaries of CUA, Ram Sahai President Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Mayor JMC Kavinder Gupta, representative from Retailers Association, Pharmaceuticals Association and Bar Association.
Extending their full support to the movement launched in Jammu by the student community and allied bodies demanding setting up of Central University at Samba for which about 4000 kanals of land has already been identified, the All Jammu Hotels and Lodges Association today warned the government of serious consequences of any hanky pinkie on the issue.
The association regretted the connivance of the politicians from Jammu belonging to the ruling coalition parties in this game plan to deny Jammu region its due. None of the cabinet ministers belonging to Jammu region whether from the Congress or the National Conference took the stand in the meeting that first thing should be done first i.e. the already allotted Central University for the state be setup in Jammu, whereas IIM is to be setup in Kashmir valley. This is despite the fact that in their meeting with some prominent citizens of Jammu last week, chaired by the Deputy Chief Minister Tara Chand and attended by the Industries Minister Surjit Singh Salathia, G M Saroori and Political Advisor to the Chief Minister Devinder Singh Rana an assurance was held that the already allotted University for the state will be located in Jammu and IIM in Kashmir and that request will be made to the Centre to sanction one more Central University for Kashmir and an IIT which will be located in Jammu.
Students of various colleges continued holding protest demonstrations here for the fifth consecutive day today in support of their demand for setting up a Central University in Jammu division. Students of MAM College boycotted their classes and held protest demonstration on the main road outside the College, blocking traffic for half an hour and raised anti-government slogans. Similar protest demonstrations were held in Science College at Canal road and Women College Parade. Students of Degree College of Bishnah tehsil also boycotted their classes today and held protest demonstrations demanding establishment of a Central University at Samba.
A group of about 20-25 activists of Panthers Party also held a dharna near exhibition ground on the issue. Reports from Kathua district said that lawyers suspended their work in courts in support of the student's demand.
Hundreds of students, including girls from various city colleges, are protesting for the past one week over shifting of CU to Kashmir, which was allotted by the Union Government to Jammu Region for which land was also identified at Samba.
Meanwhile, apprehending a 'mass agitation' ahead over Central University (CU) issue, additional troops, including paramilitary forces, have been deployed in the winter capital of the state to tackle the situation.
Learning lessons from last year's two-month long agitation over the Amarnath land row, Jammu Police has deployed additional forces including CRPF troops and Armed Police, within the walled city to avoid the situation from deteriorating. Jammu Police have also geared up to fight another 'mass agitation', which according to the sources, may be accelerated in the coming days. ''Over 300 additional troops have been kept reserved and they have been asked to patrol the locations near city colleges and Jammu University as precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incident,'' sources said. Keeping in mind the Amarnath land agitation, in which many security personnel were injured, some of them seriously, forces are getting ready to face any situation, if the agitation continues.
