| Govt has to amend Parliament Act to announce CU for Kashmir: BJP | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 2 : As agitations over Central University issue intensify in this winter capital, the BJP today said that Central Government constitutionally cannot announce second university for Kashmir region as it requires amendment of the Parliament Act. ''As per the Parliament Act, 13 Central Universities were sanctioned across the country, including Jammu region for which land has already been identified at Samba,'' former BJP state president and senior leader Nirmal Singh told reporters at a press conference here this morning. Singh alleged that Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is keen in establishing a Central University also in Kashmir region but the Union Government should think over as it has already been allotted to Jammu and cannot be sanctioned to Kashmir, which would be ''unconstitutional''. ''When IIM was announced for Kashmir, we did not oppose but it’s time for Jammu to get its share in the shape of Central University,'' Mr Singh said adding that then why state government wants another university for Kashmir. ''Under the Parliament Act, a Central University has been sanctioned to Jammu and without its amendment the proposal can neither be cancelled nor another university be announced for Kashmir,'' the BJP leader alleged. He further said that for the past ten days, students are on roads. The state as well as the Centre should not forget the ‘Mass Andolan’ during Amarnath land row.''Jammu is not weak. The Government should not test our nerves.People are united and they will fight for their rights to end 60-year-old discrimination,'' he added. Meanwhile, BJP leader Leela Karan Sharma, who led last year’s Jammu agitation accompanied Mr Singh and said that people of Jammu were always taken "for granted" but it would not be accepted anymore. ''We want justice and equal rights. No more Kashmir-centric leadership. Central University has to be established in Jammu,'' added Leela Karan.
