| Four infiltrators dead, six exfiltrators nabbed | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar: In the first such case this year, six youth were arrested by police in Kupwara district while they were attempting to exfiltrate to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) for arms training, a senior police officer said on Sunday.
"We have arrested six youngmen who were planning to go across the border for arms training," Senior Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Uttam Chand told reporters on phone. He said the youth, hailing from Tarzoo village of Sopore in Baramulla district, were arrested from Lolab valley yesterday following a tip off.
"They are being questioned," the Kupwara police chief said adding they were not accompanied by any guide at the time of the arrest. This is the first group of local youth intercepted and arrested by police while attempting to cross over to PoK for arms training this year. The trend of going for arms training had declined sharply over the past several years as local youth got disillusioned with militancy which had taken a heavy toll since its eruption in the early 90's.
Meanwhile, alert troops foiled yet another major infiltration bid when they gunned down four heavily armed militants in a forest near the Line of Control (LoC) in the frontier district of Kupwara.
However, a defence ministry spokesman said today that details about whether they were infiltrators and their affiliation were not yet received.
He said troops challenged and asked a group of heavily armed militants in Bangus valley woods in the north Kashmir district of Kupwara to surrender.
However, the militants opened fire with automatic weapons and also hurled hand grenades on troops who also retaliated.Spokesman said four militants have so far been killed by the troops.''We are yet to get information whether they were infiltrators,'' he said adding details about the weapons they were carrying was being collected.
