| Make RTI effective: CPI (M) | | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Aug 3: State unit of CPI(M) Monday urged the National Conference led coalition government to make the Jammu and Kashmir Right to Information Act people oriented. "The state government should make Jammu and Kashmir Right to Information Act people oriented by making certain insertions and deletions, which would benefit people at large for fetching desired information cheaply, timely and easily," state secretary of CPI(M) MY Tarigami said in a statement here. He said simplifying the procedural formalities under the Act was need of the hour. "The J&K RTI Act in its present form carries a few provisions, which are contrary to that of Central Act, thereby making it difficult for information seekers to avail the benefits," he said. Making a mention of exorbitant application fee under rule four of the Act, Tarigami said the fee of Rs 50 for filing an information request was five times more than what was stipulated by the central government and majority of state governments, he said and suggested that the BPL applicants desirous of seeking information under J&K RTI Act should be exempted from the application fee. The communist leader said it was also astonishing that under rule five of J&K RTI Act, an additional fee of Rs 10 was to be charged per page from the applicant for getting copies or created pages of the information sought under the Act.
