| It is myth, Malik discovered Amarnath Cave: Prof Koul | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 4- Ahead of culmination of annual Amarnath pilgrimage eminent Kashmiri Pandit historian and scholar ML Koul on Tuesday released a comprehensive booklet on The Amarnath pilgrimage- History and Facts at a simple book release ceremony organized by Panun Kashmir under the banner of PRAKASH.
The book release function was presided over by Prof BL Fotedar and attended by large number of scholars, eminent Kashmiri Pandits and academicians. Chairman Panun Kashmir Ajay Chrungoo and Prof Hari Om also attended the function.
Touching upon the widely published viewpoint that holy cave of Amarnath was discovered by a Malik, Prof ML Koul in his booklet has stated that, “ it is a mere myth, a fib, lie and fabrication that the holy cave of Amarnath was discovered by a Malik in 1845 A.D.
Prof Koul has further noted in the same chapter that as per my personal findings, "the Maliks of Batakoot are those who proved stubborn beyond limits and failed to reconcile to the Mughal conquest of Kashmir and to avoid annihilation hid themselves at a distant place in the mountainous region away from the gaze of the Mughal soldiers".
Prof Koul mentioned in his booklet that, "as Maliks lost their ancestral occupation and had become rudderless and vagrant, the Dogra rulers, in view of their history, harnessed their services as guides to the pilgrims en-route to the Holy cave of Amarnath".
Prof Koul has said in his book that over the years the Maliks were assigned the additional jobs of maintenance of the rough track, raising of small sheds on the routes and physical safety of the pilgrims. In lieu of their services they were paid a sufficient part of the offerings that the devotees offered to the icy lingam in the holy cave.
On the occasion MM Munshi presented a paper ‘The Holy cave Shrine of Amarnath Ji-Tirthe of Amreshvara’. His paper dealt with the physiographic, routes and history of the pilgrimage. Referring to the historical documents Munshi described the Lingaa at the Amreshvara as the only ice lingam in the whole world that is being visited and worshipped by pilgrims since early if not pre- historic time. The paper presented by Munshi clearly says that there is no evidence to prove that the Amarnathji cave was lost for thousands or hundreds of years until it were rediscovered by Maliks of Batakoot
In his presidential address Prof BL Fotedar described PRAKSH as socio-cultural initiative launched by Panun Kashmir to dispel the darkness created by distortions of the history of Kashmir and its contribution to world civilization.
Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Panun Kashmir Ajay Chrungoo said the controversy over Amarnath pilgrimage or the distortion of the history about the yatra shall not be seen in isolation. He said that distorting or rewriting history; changing names of the places that have Hindu civilization are all aimed at axing the civilization connectivity of Kashmir with the rest of India or denigrating all those symbols that are Hindu in nature.
