Crop cultivation in Kandi belt to be intensified: Mir
8/4/2009 10:35:49 PM
Early Times Report
Jammu, Aug 4--The state Government has decided to lay emphasis on crop cultivation in carevas and in Kandi belts of the three regions. This was being done after a recent survey found that between seven and nine per cent of the land in the state was under crop cultivation.
According to G. H. Mir, Minister for Agriculture, "we need more land for growing different crops and we have decided to bring more carevas and Kandi belts besides orchards under crop cultivation. "He said the officers of the Department of Agriculture would meet orchardists to persuade them to grow crops in their orchards which would not affect fruit cultivation.
Mir said that the scientists of the SKUAST had not only evolved new varieties of wheat and rice but some pulses which could be grown in Kandi areas. He said these scientists have found that most of the kandi belts had fertile land but intensive agricultural practices could not be carried out in such belts because of lack of irrigation facilities. He said that the Department of Agriculture will coordinate its activities with the Department of Irrigation so that certain programs could be started in the rain-fed areas of the valley.
In reply to a question Mir said that double cropping practices were possible in many areas of the state but over the years the farmers have banked on single crop practices .He said the SKUAST scientists had evolved new varieties of wheat and rice which could help farmers in reviving double cropping practices. He admitted that weather related problems forced farmers to suffer heavy losses. It is in this connection that the Government will pursue vigorously the plan of bringing the entire farming community under the cover of crop insurance. He said that the scheme had not been implemented properly till date.
The Minister for Agriculture said that his attempt would be to ensure increase in food grain production so that the Government had not to bank on heavy imports of wheat and rice. He said over the years people have shifted to fruit cultivation as it yielded better returns than received from production of wheat and rice. However, there was need for growing crops in the orchards without affecting fruit cultivation. Once it was done the agricultural production would touch a new high
