| INDIAN JUDICIARY PERFORMING ROLE OF POLICE TASK FORCE: INQLABI | | KASHMIR BAR LAWYERS JOIN PROTESTS FOR SECOND DAY IN SUPPORT OF AFZAL GURU | | Srinagar, Sept 28, 06: Protests in restive Kashmir Valley continued for the second consecutive day on Thursday against the Delhi court decision to hang Mohammad Afzal Guru to death on October 20. Guru has been declared offender for his role in the Indian Parliament attack case of December 2001. Activists of both factions of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Democratic Liberation Party and lawyers of Kashmir Bar Association staged separate peaceful protest demonstrations today against the verdict. At least 100 lawyers of Kashmir Bar Association led by President Mian Abdul Qayoom marched peacefully through the heart of Srinagar in support of Guru. Chanting slogans against the capital punishment verdict, the protesters said he (Guru) was not given a fair trial. The protesting lawyers said that the decision is politically motivated. In a separate protests demonstration, scores of DLP activists raised slogans in favor of Guru. Veteran separatist leader Azam Inqlabi in his statement to the press strongly condemned the verdict. "What sense does it make to implicate innocent Kashmiri youth like Afzal Guru in fake cases when all Kashmiris are looking forward to the proposed dialogue between the helmsmen of India and Pakistan? Indian judiciary, it seems, is performing the job of Police Task Force," Mr Inqlabi said in the statement. Syed Ali Shah Geelani, chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat and his faction of All Parties Hurriyat Conference also condemned the court verdict saying, " India wants to suppress Kashmiris by implicating innocent Kashmiris in fake cases." People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) too strongly condemned the decision taken to hang Mohammad Afzal on October 20. "Not only does PUDR condemn death penalty in principle, but in this case, PUDR has followed the Parliament attack case closely from the time it was committed to trial under POTA and had observed the denial of fair trial in this particular case," PUDR's report, "A Trial of Errors" noted. "Unfortunately, our apprehensions have come true. Besides lack of fair trial, it is well known that Afzal did not have access to proper legal aid during the course of trial. Therefore, the punishment of death penalty to him is unfair and must be commuted. What is even more shocking is the fact that the date of hanging coincides with Diwali," Deepika Tandon, Secretary, PUDR said in the report. |
