| Jairam at BGSB University today | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Aug 4: Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh will arrive in Jammu tomorrow for his onward journey to Baba Ghulam Badshah University at Rajouri. The local administration and the State Forest Department was, however, unaware of Union Forest Minister’s visit to Jammu and Rajouri. Jairam is visiting Rajouri at at the Centre for Biodiversity Studies the flagship academic department of the Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University to inaugurate and launch the PG Teaching Programme in Bioresource and Biotechnology. Established with a mission to conserve biodiversity the centre has CBS has so far been devoted only to research, extension and environmental education. This year the CBS has added Ph. D degree programme and Masters level teaching course on Bioresource and Biotechnology. In view of the importance Bioresources the Union Minister has graciously accepted to launch it. The launch function will also being attended by various eminent scientists from both within and outside Jammu and Kashmir. The University has been maintaining a biodiversity park that acts as a repository of the flora and fauna of Pir Panjal Himalayas. In recognition of the efforts of the CBS the Union Environment and Froests Ministry has already sanctioned the Lead Botanical Garden status for the North Western Phytogeographic Region beside supporting its ecological restoration project under the Greening India Scheme. In view of the expansion of research and conservation activities in the Biodiversity park the union Minister shall also be launching the Park and Mahatama Gandhi Chair for Environment and Ecology in recognition of the fact that Gandhian Philosophy of the environmental conservation has been globally recognised and endorsed by the United Nations.
